This is far above my stove knowledge level,,, maybe someone here can explain it to me. Both say “Primus 71”, both have “Sweden” about their persons, one NIB, one obviously much used before I ever acquired it... But why are the founts so different?

    Both are Optimus made P71s
sold under Primus Trading Co. name.
If we look closely at the 2 I think we find
every part is different, not just tanks.

You're NOS is '71 or later (grooves on rizer).
The shorty is slightly earlier (63 - 71?) but does not have it's original filler cap.
If shorty had it's orig. cap we might narrow that date range. The orig. cap may (or may not) have matched the one on the NOS.

The "stamped" tank of the shorty may also narrow date range… off top of my head I'm not sure.
BTW there are a few more different "Primus 71" tanks than the 2 shown in OP.
    thx omc

@OMC The leaky “original” cap for the much used 71 is on the left, and the cap I borrow from a 123r is of course on the right.

(I supposed this is where I confess to having no knowledge as to how-to a defunct safety valve pip, or even it it can be replaced on this cap.)

you did not ask that we date your stove, sorry.

Your orig. cap is a 298D so '63/64 is "possibility" if it were the next filler cap they used would place it closer to '70.

If updated detail is out here it escapes me at the moment. I'll confess again (a comment I made elsewhere) as of yet:
"I dunno how long the "Primus" stamping on shorty P71 tank continued? or approx. what year ended use of 298D cap?
Off top of my head, I vaguely recall 298D still in use '67/68 and that examples show the next one in use at some point in 1970.
[possibly late 69-70 but before '71]
TMI I know, gotta go, thx omc
