Over the years, have cracked a few NRV's using just a small wrench and slotted screwdriver, crushed a few squishing with Vise Grips padded with leather. What to do? Recently while working on a early Optimus stove, thought of using sandpaper. Presto! Worked great, doesn't require potentially crushing force with Vise Grips, pliers are sufficient with the "sand" facing the NRV of course. Even using leather the NRV would still rotate.

    another good post  .
What grit did you have your success with?
sand paper backing varies (wet sanding), some made from screen, etc. etc. etc.
BUT you maybe used the most basic paper-backed (is why no mention)

i vaguely recall chb? suggesting grasp it with a drill chuck.. one might consider combine the 2 methods.
unless i've missed it, sand paper is new one.

I couldn't see the grit # anymore on the piece I used, over 200 I believe. I reuse some stuff too long. :) Works good for carbon removal in lipstick burners.

I use a drill chuck. Originally Christer Carlsson’s idea, if I remember correctly.

I keep forgetting that method. Will have to see if that will work for me, all I have is my drill.

I found an old junk rechargeable drill that I took to with a hacksaw.

    thanks for update Tony.

i might opt to cannibalize a newer/good drill, my well-used drills no longer have the best grip.

    hack saw, whoa,
drill chucks i use are removeable, swappable even, follow instructions.

Tried my old drill, worked fine, but then only tried a new NRV. Also, sandpaper should work on pump shafts, but so far leather piece and Vise Grips handle them.
