The day after posting THIS entry in the Stove Reference Gallery I took delivery of this unused Shmel 2.

On the left is the Shmel with the different burner type, of which @Aleks-S said,

The ‘transitional’ model’s burner height is less than the ‘post-transitional’ type, more obvious when the pot rest/windshield is installed.

Of the many examples on auction sites at the moment I picked this one because of the instruction leaflet that came with it.

Many had leaflets but the seller’s photos disclosed that this one had illustrations of the ‘transitional’ burner. All the rest had the later burner type depicted. Mis-matched leaflet? Possibly, but I was glad to have it.

The leaflet gave me an opportunity to use Google Translate by letting the app translate text directly from my phone’s camera. Partially successful, with some bits lost in translation!

Back to the very knowledgeable @Aleks-S, who said of the control mechanism
Naturally, I was keen to check whether this Shmel was the earlier production type with the integral ‘cone’ on/off/regulator or the ball bearing type.

I extracted the control spindle to release the relevant component. Revealed, the ‘cone’ type.

Removed from the burner, it enables me to demonstrate a tool included in the spare parts kit …

… the key designed to provide access to the pricker for removing/replacing it with the assembly installed in the burner.

A detail, the newer Shmel has a burner with an outer cap (top in photo) with a distinctive hole arrangement compared to the more usual spacing regularity of the equivalent cap from the ‘transitional’ burner (below).

    And in their containers.

Finally, burner regulation control - very good.

An observation about the pump cap and handle. There’s an obvious difference between those on the Shmel 4 (left) and the 2’s.

The Shmel 4’s pump cap doesn’t have the ‘wings’ on the Shmel 2’s cap so seems poorly equipped for gripping by comparison.

There are however flats on the 4’s pump handle base which the 2’s doesn’t have.

A clever arrangement to enable the 4’s pump handle to double up as a cap tightening/unscrewing aid.

    Handle position locked/stowed for transport.

With the flats aligned with the corresponding socket in the pump cap the pump handle provides the required leverage.

It took me a while (too long!) to work that out.

Forgot about this modification. My guess this is a transitional between transitions - after "kitchens sinks drains", and before oval-holed bells with balls.
