When I used unleaded the stove was used at totally full bore all the time. I found only the tips of the flames had a yellow colouration. I understand that this denotes the mixture was rich but not excessively so.
If the flame is disturbed by any wind it does cause soot formation on your pans, which you can't avoid.
It may also deposit what I can describe as a varnish like deposit, a dark brown stain.
As for the smell - keep upwind, especially if you are frying anything.
