Sigg Traveller

There is an alcholol stove on ebay made by Sigg that is exactly like the Trangia stoves. When did Sigg make these? The stove does not look very old based on the box. Did Trangia make these for Sigg? The more I look at this site and Ebay the more I realize how very little I know about stoves.

I've seen these for sale in the UK but only at one specialist fishing tackle shop. It is very similar to the Trangia but was a lot more expensive. The whole outfit was also black. I never checked the country of origin but given their product line I would imagine it was made by Sigg - maybe made under license?. The high price & lack of edge over the established Trangia kept it out of the usual outdoor equipment shops.
There is a cheap far-eastern knock off of the Trangia in a lot of the budget camping shops over here but the build quality is nowhere near as good. It's almost identical to the the older 50/60's style Trangia - maybe a different patent that has now expired?

The Traveller is completely Swiss made by Sigg, the brass burner being almost identical to the Trangia, except the 'simmer ring' flips up with a spring, revealing the perimeter jets. The quality is impeccable of course, and it is significantly heavier than the larger sized Trangia. The pots were offered in stainless steel (like the one on Ebay) and Sigg's duossal (Stainless inner bonded to an Aluminum outer). They seem to have been manufactured from the mid '80s to the late '90s, I picked one up at a surplus store here in Idaho about 8 years back for $30, decent considering they retailed for over $100! There was an Australian website offering these stoves, but I am unable to find it, perhaps our Australian contributors can shed some light on the distribution of this fine set? Too bad, Sigg seems to have stopped production of this as well as their neat Fire-Jet stove, and also their various cooksets and pots, which were oh-so fine. A Porsche among stoves!

Sigg Stoves

I agree that Sigg products are first rate, although my only experience has been with pots, pans and fuel bottles. How does the Fire-Jet stove compare to its peers? I don't think I have ever seen one up close. They don't show up on Ebay often.

Fire Jet

December 4 2002, 9:13 PM

The Fire Jet is a jewel of a backpacking stove, and in terms of design, it is a work of art. There are some nice closeup photos of one on Super Shioshio's fine website. The construction is impeccable, all stainless with brass fittings. The pump is plastic, though, and probably the weak point, as with MSR. As far as performance, the heat and noise output is similar to the MSR Wisperlite. The stove doesn't have a built in cleaning needle, but I have never needed to unclog the jet burning only white gas. Rather light weight, too, 12oz/340g off the top of my head, will check on that. The first versions were equiped with a rather questionable looking rubber fuel line, which was quickly upgraded to a braided stainless-steel line for obvious reasons! A few have sold on Ebay for under $30 lately, wich is really pretty fair, considering they retailed for about $90. Though as they are out of production, spares are getting scarce. So you might have to buy two!

Sigg Firejet

January 6 2003, 11:57 PM

I have a firejet which packs small gives out good heat and is very stable. Beautifully made but lightweight makes it feel a bit flimsy. My local camping shop even turned up a maintenance kit. Gold dust. I emailed sigg in switzerland about spares and they offer no continuing support. I suspect though that the pump seems to be almost the same as MSR plastic pump so this is a possible repair source.

I have not got a set of original instructions so if any body has a set I would happily pay photocopying and postage costs

Pump maintenance

August 20 2003, 9:25 AM

Rachael,

normally, you should be able to take the pump apart yourself. There's not much to go wrong there.
It's been a while that I took mine apart, so, top of my hat, I can't recall the procedure.
If you like, I will do it again and post the individual steps here.

Blue skies.
