Hello,
I began taking apart and cleaning my 501. Under the burner bowl is a strange part of the fuel line. Any help will be appreciated. Dan if you are reading this let me know where the Coleman news groip is located.

Chuck my favorite Coleman site is http://www.oldtownyucca.com/coleman/Here under Technical assistance you will find an exploded view of the 501 Frank Bebb the owner of Old Town Coleman is extremely friendly and knowledgable. Just a great guy.We also have a strong Discussion Forum. If you have the time you could spend hours on this site.To me there are a small group that I consider Experts in this hobby. Ross is one and Frank is another . Coleman group is not a favorite even though I belong to it. Dan

Good site

Dan,
Thanks! I was at the site and even e-mail Frank about the paint color. Seems he doesn't restore tanks at this time. I poked around the site earlier this month but, missed the schematic of the 501. Thanks for pointing it out and thanks for the post. The part I found to be strange is 501c3201. The burner attaches directly to this part. The fuel appears to already be a vapor when it enters that part. It is a strang piece that has a rattle to it when shaken. Is this normal? Any tips on what to avoid when putting it back together will be appreciated.

Also, what was the exact reason for sudden stop in manufacture and trades for the 502's? Was it a flare up? The design seems to be okay with the generator.

Thanks,
Chuck

501

Chuck the official reason from Coleman was the generator did not vaporize fuel properly. I know of several people that use them without complaint. Just be ready to pay an arm and a leg when it is time to replace that generator! (very hard to come by) On the reassemble It is pretty straight forward. You should have no problems.I haven't had the pleasure to own one so I would suggest posting on Old Town.I would also recommend Southern Star for all repaint and Enamal work they are a full service restorer and Cheyanne does incredible work at a reasonable price. 501 Generator possible leak.

April 15 2004, 12:53 PM

Hello,
I was cleaning the generator by heating it with a torch and plunging it into cold water. Lots of crud and deposits came out.

Then I filled the tank with vinegar to remove some rust and sediment that had acumulated with the old gasoline that was still present in the tank. (swished around with some nuts to scrape off anything stuck). then flushed with clean vinegar. I attached the generator and pumped up the tank to preasure and heated the generator witha propane torch. (the generator had a pan to drain into) The vinegar turned to gas as soon as the generator reached a high enough temp. I noticed that the nuts that attach the generator to the tank are square and require an exact placement to make a secure fit to stop any leaks after reaching full pressure. The pressure of the vaporizing full (or vinegar in this case). Would push out where the nut joined the generator to the valve stem. After adjusting the nut to the proper tightness and fit the vapor only came out of the one end. Possibly this is an area where the geneator would fail?
