Title for Banned members

The user title of banned members is currently 'Banned'. If you feel that is too emotive please send me alternative suggestions via a private message. Nothing ambiguous or woolly please.

I don't want to remove the title altogther as it could be a minor inconvenience for members who may expect a response from a banned member.

& yes, I have soft-deleted the other threads that were in this discussion.

 

Well, that's one way to end a discussion I suppose.

Nothing wrong with the term 'banned' as far as I am concerned.

The Oxford Dictionary:

"Ban - Officially prevent (someone) from doing something".

"Origin - Old English bannan 'summon by a public proclamation', of Germanic origin, reinforced by Old Norse banna 'curse, prohibit'; the noun is partly from Old French ban 'proclamation, summons, banishment'."

Why search for an alternative, when there is a perfectly good word?

Personally, I'm not at all bothered if someone who has been banned from the site might be offended.

Seemingly not. I have soft-deleted the bulk of the thread so as to remove the personal element & focus on the principal.

 

Banned is suitable and sufficient.
It works, it is the phrase used and accepted across a multitude of forums.

I understand not the great debate, if need be a paragraph in the Forum Rules should suffice to reinforce the distinction between Banned and Active Members.

May I suggest the relevant threads are locked-out and suggestions (where sensible) are routed to Admin/Mods in the first instance.

Consensus or not the 'skipper' makes the decision. I've made several suggestions and been as persuasive as I can. Now all that's left is to wait and see what comes of it if anything.

I'm not a native english speaker, so can't conform to the "nothing wooly or ambigous"- wish, for fear of not hitting the nail on the head.
I'd like to see something neutral like user/profile/account - deactivated/terminated/deleted/closed.

I feel the word "banned" started as early internet speak for being cast out of live chats, where rude behaviour was very common, and monikers were as temporary as the discussions almost. Quite a different situation from latter day forums where most posts will be archived.

 

'Deactivated' doesn't have a strong enough connotation, and sounds like the account could be reactivated without much thought and without much recompense.

'Terminated' sounds like the user was fired from working at the website or that Arnold Schwarzenegger was involved somehow.

I don't think 'deleted' could be used since it might be possible to easily, and without thought, undelete or restore the user, and also connotes non-existense once the deletion has occurred.

Any account can be 'closed' for just about any activity such as inactivity.

Now, 'banned' provides a whole different feeling to the action and resulting status. First it connotes a feeling of expulsion and removing of privileges from area of concern. And, second, the status is that the subject is not wanted in the area of concern due to some activity that was offensive or puts owners at risk. For example, I recently read an article about Brad Pitt being banned from China for being in the movie Seven Years in Tibet since he might cause a disruption to society. The reasons don't matter as much as the act of banning - the group just doesn't want the guy there and the word fits his status.

There are several more words that come close to the right meaning and connotation but none as effective that conveys the meaning so well with syllabic economy as 'banned' does.

Wow, for a non-native English speaker you really came up with some good ideas. I particularly like "Deactivated." I haven't heard back from Ross on any of my prior suggestions but I'm going to send this one in and hope for some feedback. Deactivated is neutral, concise, and describes the persons status perfectly.

I seriously cannot believe this discussion is ongoing, Ross hasn't just made a decision and stuck to it, and that I keep wasting my mental effort and time posting in it. And all because one person has a hang up about something that is beyond commonplace on internet forums, and has been for a long time. It's gonna be a looooooooooooooooong winter if this site remains hung up on petty nonsense such as this.

I would just leave this very peculiar "one man's wish" for what it's worth, and simply keep the old, standardized, commonly used word "Banned".

Why reinvent the wheel?

 

Banned is still my favourite word but suggestions are incoming. I think at times I need to be less consensual!

'Inactive' would be better. When someone is banned their account is inactivated. No one will question why an account is "Inactive" and it will end the cycle of heated discussions. It will also end the life long public shaming for the past transgression that prompted the ban.
