Wow! I was just wondering if the 550B was ever made in China, or, if as OMC has suggested, it was discontinued when the migration to China was made! And yes, I do still have my first set of Craftsman tools I bought in 1971. Never broke a single one.
This has gone round in great circles. Two statements often seen on packaging come to mind 1: "Manufactured in (insert country of choice) from local and imported components" 2 "100% real ingredients" Neither statement really inspires much confidence. Take your fairly standard sub compact size Chevy All the parts are made in Korea or China and arrive in Detroit in boxes. They are put together and low and behold you have an American car. The favorite American vehicle sold in New Zealand is the Jeep Cherokee They are a great car. Jeep America never produced a right hand drive Jeep. All the Jeeps sold in New Zealand are made in Belgium I think. Then you have piracy I spend a fair bit of time on Ali Express and try and avoid the obvious fakes I know you wont find a Grinal knife there (you will but it wont be made by grinal) but you can find other brand knives that look identical except for a different handle or something Sometimes they are good sometimes not. You can also find stuff that is original and stuff that is original except for a brand name picked at random and sometimes misspelt. Is the 550 made in China? I would be surprised but BRS make a stove so similar it could be a clone.
@HercL4D2 , You, Sir, are a true Gentleman, and I appreciate your well done apology! As one who has stepped on more than few toes here at CCS, in the old days, I know what it's like to feel bad about stirring the pot, either accidentally, or intentionally! Most of the time, my own zeal and patriotism got me into deep waters, when I was trying to make what I thought was a very cogent and obvious point. I've learned that backing off a tad, and keeping a good sense of humor, with respect for others, is the way to go, and since those old, contentious days, I try hard not to go over the line. It gets easier as the time passes. But, there are times when I still have to hold my tongue, even if I think I'm right about something. Better to sit quietly, than to take a chance on souring an otherwise great great, me thinks, at least for Ol' Doc!! Works for me, anyway, and possible food for thought. China, nowadays you would be correct in saying 99% of things sold here in Australia probably is made in China. This is not an issue in it self, the Chinese can make some fine things. The issue is with the people ordering it to be made. They will ask what price point, cheep equals low cost , expensive equils quality. They can for a price make any quality you ask for. I for one have a bit of Chinese machinery and it's very good and at the price why pay two or three times the amount for local . I have tried to support local but it's out of the question now, poor service, long lead times, quality no better (in some cases). That's my two cents worth. Cheers Rob
i may have the wrong end of the stick here, but can report that there is no correlation between who defeated the nazis and quality of motorcycles they produce i know this for a fact because i had a russian motorbike years ago and it was crap
The Royal Enfields were a lovely bike I remember at school one of the teachers rode one Excellent exhaust note. I imagine an Indian Royal Enfield bought new today would be exactly the same. They have stopped making Morris Oxfords now though.
You'd be amazed to know what famous motorcycle maker is going to move their production to India........ Cheap labor you know!
Motorcycles is one of my several points of interests... But I stopped interesting in modern ones (already ?) ten years ago.. Which one is it ? A Japanese one ?
I think Wim may be referring to Harley Davidson. They already have built an enormous plant in India and are producing their full line of bikes for sales in that part of the planet. They are also producing smaller bikes that are popular in the region. Rumor has it that because of labor costs they are slowing production in the U.S. in preparation for eventual imports from their plant in India. Mike...
the ones i have seen are just called enfields - seems to be some badge engineering going on somewhere - having read this thread more carefully it is now quite obvious that Maestro is the best damn moderator on this website and it is a national nay international bloody scandal that he is not an official moderator, his outstanding technical skills are matched by his powers of diplomacy and vigilance - note the finesse with which he pours oil on ruffled feathers that spiritbummer chap needs to open the books and do the right thing and get Presscall bumped up without any further delay so once again and for the last time i shout PRESSCALL FOR MODERATOR!!!!
