10% methanol in wine,. Nah I don't think that is true. https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=http://ec.europa.eu/growth/tools-databases/tbt/en/search/?tbtaction=get.comment&Country_ID=IDN&num=101&dspLang=EN&comment_num=3&lang_id=EN&basdatedeb=,&basdatefin=&baspays=IDN&baspays2=IDN&basnotifnum=101&basnotifnum2=101&bastypepays=IDN&baskeywords=&ved=2ahUKEwin8uf3hdvcAhWQXsAKHb0tBjIQFjAAegQIAxAB&usg=AOvVaw2c61-7JOQzLZHVh9LA7R_z&cshid=1533648679353
A wine bottle holds 158 fl. oz. 10% of that is 15.8 fluid ounces. That is almost 5 times the typical lethal dose of 3.4 fl. oz. of methanol. Compared to a lot of things that's pretty toxic. Ben
200g per 100L, isn't that .002, or .00002%? Or I guess even less, since alcohol is about .8g/mL, so .000016%.
I said up to 10%. But remember you are drinking ethanol which slows down the metabolism of methanol enough that your body can cope with it. Assuming a healthy person. If you do a full analysis of wine, it contains all sorts of chemicals in it. But for example apple pips ( and many other fruit) have cyanide in them. You just normally dont ingest enough that your body can't handle. One disadvantage of working in the analytical industry is you fine out jyst what is in everything around you. BTW. Even these days standards are not always ' fully' met. Bad batch of product? Slowly mix it in with good batches! Happens all the time!
Just contacted a friend still in the industry. A good wine has on average 2% methanol. A bad one 10~12%. Then add the sulphides and a lot of other things.... I will still enjoy my red wine and still use Methanol for fuel. Just as I use Coleman etc.Kero can have a great deal of crap in it! Alcohols if the burn is complete (neutral or oxygen rich) then you get CO2 and water. Any fuel not fully burnt has 'nasties' in it. We have had threads like this before. Use what fuels you are happy with. Some won't use white gas. Others use car petrol. Just treat with respect. In the past we used to wash our hands in Trichloroethylene or even bromine!
I have just re read what I put and understand where confusion would be. the 10% is 10% of the alcohol in the wine! I am sorry if I put it wrong. Having a bad day pain wise! So a 12% by vol wine would have up to 10% of the 12% as methanol. I hope that has made it clearer. I apologise for not putting it clearly enough. Alan
Interesting reading, I take all points in. My mother used to say “ a little or everything and not to much of anything “ ummmm. As you know water is toxic too, if you drink too much of it you die from drowning. So what does all this mean ? I will carry on in my usual way. Cheers Rob
@Macaroon, it's not the product that's interesting, why does it get 100's of reviews? The price isn't the best bit just the fact that Amazon and supplier have retained the fun for so long. If you've not read through the reviews before then please take the effort, the reviewers certainly did.
I do not think it a good price anywhere. But, it is cleaner. And free shipping. I cannot find that product anywhere in my area. I like the recommendation by Ross, and others, of the BioEthanol as the best fuel. [Except maybe 'Pure Grain Alcohol] sold in the liquor stores here, for I have no idea how much. But, Ben listed a link of 6 quarts for 40 dollars, and I got 12 quarts, different brand name, for 60 dollars. I paid 20 dollars a gallon. 'Green' Ethanol at the 'Big Box' hardware store is 7 dollars a quart. Denatured alcohol is about 14/15 dollars a gallon. I will see if some friends want some.
I think if you use alcohol as your "fuel" as opposed to using it as a primer, the specs are more important. I cook in my tent porch in winter all of the time and when backpacking I only use alcohol so I want the best. That means no smell and at least 95% ethanol.
@salan3 Hi Alan I don't know from where where you got your percentages of methanol in wine. This should make it clearer.
@Macaroon I have to admit that I did not look very far. I was in my local B&Q last week. They sell meths at ₤3.87 for 500 ml - ₤7.74 per litre. Their ethanol comes in a 2 litre bottle costing ₤6.00 - ₤3.00 per litre.
Colin, that is an excellent price for meths. I wonder if the expensive meths in B&Q is different to that sold in Home Bargains? I suspect they are the same. Does Home Bargains also sell ethanol?
I think Trevor's source is right about the very small percentage of methanol in wine. I am very skeptical about reports of a larger portion.
