I was reading a thread on another collector site where specimens that are known ( suspected) to be ten or less in existence are catalogued. Wondering how many stoves here would fit that category and if there would be any interest in doing it also. Or...would bringing the rarity to light be negative for the overall price of said stoves...if that makes sense...

    I'll bite.
Re "Or...would bringing the rarity to light be negative for the overall price of said stoves...if that makes sense..."

No doubt opinions vary. I am leery of discussing details of oldest extremely rare (just 10 exist) examples.

Price is one thing but, re the extremely rare.... in-depth research can give a researcher a hard-earned advantage, increasing chance of finding an example (if ever).
I'm not anxious to open-post hard-earned details / terms (to my competition ;) ). [FWIW as fisherman, over many years I've lucked into a handful of little known "honey holes"... the exact locations of those are kept secret as well.]

That said I do post rare maker or model specific details regularly and a strong proponent of contributing reference content.

FWIW there is "the technical museum visit" post, a favorite, containing many very rare museum pieces. I'm content that it remain an obscure post. A post i'll not be the one to link here hehehehe. thx omc

I think the less than 10 list is a great suggestion. I've got 2 of the 3 Primus 14's in the Reference Gallery. Until another seven turn up it should make the list.

Less than ten known, or less than ten posted here?

If the thread was to be started I would think that all references should be noted...not just here..

Less than 10 known to still exist anywhere. If they're posted here that would qualify but quoting historical production numbers would not.

How would one know? What is the definition of 'known'? Who and how many need to know for something to be known?

This caught my eye because at several Coleman meets there was a discussion of The Basford 6 stove. And the more active, well known members did say they knew of only a few, and named the 5, then 6, members, other than me. Are there more, probably.

How many Optimus 9 stoves are known of?

Clayton & Lambert three-burner. I've got one of three known. Doc Mark, the greedy bastard, has the other two.

One CCS member vouching for the existence of each individual stove should be sufficient. As more examples surface the list can be adjusted with models having more than ten examples being eliminated. Photos, if available, would be appreciated.

I can verify the one in my possession. So, that's one so far.

I don't know how old it is. All I've posted are the french instructions that came with it. One of these days I'm going to fettle it back operating condition and post some photos.

Zip 2 burner isnt that uncommon plus its a rebadge of something else.
I like the idea. Stoves that are that rare dont get traded often so the price will already be out of this world and never seen on ebay.
The big question is how to quantify a number for a stove. We dont represent all stove collectors and those that are here dont post everything they have.
A case in point would be a primus stove I have that I think I might be the only post of. Is it rare? Its a Primus isobutane stove probably 20 years old and made in the 1000s The chance of less than 10 existing is pretty remote.
Then there are those stoves sold under many badges. Should they be treated as unique? There might only be a couple of xzza stoves but 100 azzx stoves which are identical except for the badge

I have a Paradise 1-pinter of which there should have been no more than ten manufactured, but that is probably not the case. Indeed, the one I have should itself never have been made.

I have a Prisma 00 that is probably my own rarest, but it certainly would not come close to qualifying.

Quite like the list of stoves that should never have been made Ed. :)
