I doubt they were treated well. The stoves I mean. Still no clues how the cup washer comes off. It must be field strippable, surely?
Surely, yes. No alternative but to grind off the peened edge with a Dremel or similar, leaving enough intact thread to engage with the nut, then threadlock to secure as Kerophile recommended.
Drastic. I might have to pop it in the lathe and modify it. The rod looks decent enough and solid. I could trim the end off and then thread it. But I shall have to go up the shaft a bit so that everything will fit back on. At present it's working so I'll leave well alone. Or buy a replacement Petromax unit to fanny around with to keep this original.
A Petromax pump is available as a spare certainly. I see Base Camp stock them. Presumably that wouldn’t have the threads peened over. Swap the chrome pump cap and blue pump knob for the Geniol’s and you’d have a pump you could change thr cup washer on. Correction: I see the pump cap’s already a chrome one - as it is on mine. Hadn’t noticed. Base Camp have a brass cap (for the purist?)
Aaaaahhh haaaaa! I've hunted out my most powerful magnifier and I can just see the edges of a thread. It's not peened at all. I can't get it apart just now and I don't want to fnaark it it. But the Petromax spares page listed the square thing as a nut. I thought, hmm, a nut is it? Yes it seems to be.
@Chris J Yes, it’s a square nut on the Geniol. You mentioned the prospect of the serviceability of the Geniol by your average squaddy. It proved very reliable when I was ‘on active service’ last summer.

I surely did. But I have to say with the NRV properly fettled, it seems to be functioning significantly better. Not sure any further faffing is necessary at this point.
Hello Prescall. Just recently discovered this Heinzol geniol. What a luxury, close to obscene A pre-heating burner, a pressure gauge and the burner head looks almost the same (just the cap with many small holes) as my Shmel-2 stove. Now ,if this german stove could burn diesel fuel as found in any gas station ,it would be the perfect stove. Even better than british army no.12 stove,wich burns diesel from what I found out. But having that mechanical pressure gauge AND a pre-heating burner is amazing! I would seriously trade my Shmel-2 for this Heinzol Geniol. If it could burn diesel. Am very pleased with daily using Shmel 2 ,almost a routine now, but I do need alcoohol for preheat and to be carefull using it... I've allready set my left hand on fire twice now... Because it burns invisibly ,no visible flame... Or at least not easily seen with normal eye... Only once needed hospital care plus about a month of replacing bandages... Second time I set my left hand on fire was "easier" to put out (had allready the can of water for boiling/cooking ready ,so I just stuck the hand in there...). So yeah, don't know how those germans made that preheating burner but it's very usefull and would be very happy to have it on my cooking stove. The perfect cooking stove in my view would be something like british army no.12(or heinzol geniol) but with a preheating burner(scared of alcoohol allready) and able to burn diesel fuel as found in any gas station. I actually use my Shmel 2 for cooking on the road(parking lots) and these things matter a lot for me! Must mention that since I've seen many here buy these stoves for collection not actual every day use! Cheers!
It is addictive, once you buy a liquid fuel stove ,you'll want some more. I will try to stick to one. But a liquid stove able to burn diesel fuel, now I want one with preheating like in this heinzol geniol, and able to burn cook in minus 25-30 degrees Celcius. Until I find that "perfect stove" I'll daily use to destruction the Shmel-2 stove ,although it needs alcoohol preheating and regular gasoline .both highly flamable and dangerous... As I discovered twice... Store these fuels unsafe/ badly and I might burn completely to a crisp in my truck... P.s. I too started this "burning hot hobby" with just one LPG burner... Now I have at least 5 LPG burners ,all functional,plus the gasoline Shmel-2... One LPG burner is a 9,5Kw full stainless version. Pyromania in progress Cheers
