Yes, black oxide forms on copper at red heat but not brass. Mind you, it would never get that hot in that application. It would however be quite a bit weaker than brass of the same gauge, which would be a disadvantage when using it to push the wick home, or to remove it for that matter.
@Blackdog and @snwcmpr I find WD very good as a general solvent for cleaning up some of the modern panel adhesives/sealants such as HB42 and some of those horrible price stickers. WD also do a very good penetrating oil version which I have used very successfully on some very seized stove parts! Cheers Nick
WD40 says "penetrant" right on side of can. I use it every day at work for a multitude of tasks. Also says "shake well before using" which needs to be done.
Hello fettlers, Thank you for your reactions and advices and special thanks to @presscall . I want to update the situation. I tryed to redress the thread's position before soldering the crack. I used heat(max sievert blow torch) and hammer. But instead it fell into the bottom of the blow torch. If you have any suggestion don't hesitate. Best regards.
I warned you when you first proposed it not to use a hammer, but hey, it’s done. A repair is possible, using a reinforcing plate rather than attempting to butt-join the broken edges. The plate needs to overlap the broken edge sufficiently, and silbraze should be used rather than soft solder to give sufficient strength to the joint as well as coping with the heat of torch priming and combustion.
Hi, I had no wish to get involved in this thread BUT... The most recent photos show a classic brittle fracture, with inter-granular failure and no reduction in cross-sectional area of the tank material before rupture. It seems likely that the brass tank is compromised and any repair is doomed to failure before you start. Best advice is to abandon any thought of repair and to re-cycle the tank material. Best Regards, Kerophile.
Thank you @kerophile for your answer. Yes the tank seems to be compromised. But I will try some soldering like @presscall suggested. No problem if it not works. Best regards.
Hi, perhaps I did not make myself clear. You have a brittle pressure vessel with multiple inter-granular cracks which you intend to patch-up and re-use! This is unwise! Have you heard of the “Darwin Awards”? Regards, Kerophile.
Hi @kerophile you scare me. I don't have intention sacrifice myself. I'm just learning some fettling techniques. Very likely I will re-use it as a blow torch but I have intention to return it to it's first condition. Best regards
Hi John @presscall i can assure you that I had followed your conversation with this member with close interest and only posted when seeing the evidence in the recent photos and the member’s stated intention to continue with the “repair” option. I apologise if you feel I have trodden on your toes. It was never my intention.... Best Regards, George.
hi @presscall so sorry il you feel "ignored" it was not my intention. @kerophile i just saw what i wrote above. i meant "very likely i will "NOT" re-use it as a blow torch but i will try to restore it. i forget the word "NOT" best regards.
Not at all, I was directing my comment to Kerophile. @kerophile The ‘Conversation’ (used to be known as a ‘Private Topic’) was unrelated to this thread and related to your 1930’s Anchor stove and my 30’s Anchor pressure lantern. Whatever, my query was resolved from another source.
Hi, John. I had no idea... I don’t know my Private Topics from my Conversations... If I offended by silence it was not my intention. Please accept my apologies and don’t give up on me. Best Regards, George.
Apologies to @anass amghar for a momentary hijack of your thread. Old pals a bit confused here … @kerophile Graciously put George, thank you. I’m relieved, I thought I was on your ‘Ignore’ list for a moment. ‘twas just a conundrum concerning your K.S Machinery Factory ‘Anchor’ stove and my Sin Hsin Works Anchor lantern of a similar era. CCS Member Zac Wang (who you consulted regarding your stove) confirmed my lantern is pre-Mao China but likely to be a product of a Chinese company taking over your Western owner era Anchor factory. Regards to you too George, John Once again, apologies @anass amghar
