I've got several roarers and I'd like to add a silent burner (kero) to my collection; something common, easy to find, and that can be found at a reasonable price.
Does easy to find include purchasing from the UK? In which case supply exceeds demand of lots of wonderful post-war British stoves such as Valor, Veritas, Buflam, Monitor, all of which are regularly to be found cheaply.
Yeah I should clarify. I'm in the US so local finds are limited, so probably looking to buy from ebay. Thanks.
Well the commonest stoves here are 1930s Primus No.5s, Optimus No.5s to a lesser extent, and 1960s versions of the same. And the Post-War British stoves which are every bit as good as the Swedes. There is a steady supply on ebay, in conditions to suit all tastes.
I just bought a silent burner to go on my Monitor C11 MoD kero stove, makes this a easy thing. Now, if I could find a silent regulated burner...... Murph
@elcarlstono , Here's an Optimus #5 that will very probably need some work. Looks nice, though, and the price is more than fair. I can't add much to whats already been said. The commonly available household standards are the No.5 types, offered by Primus, Radius, Optimus, SVEA, KFE etc in Scandinavia; Valor, Buflam, Monitor, Samuel Heath & Sons, etc in the UK. They are a fairly bulletproof design and have been doing their thing (some of them) for 125 years or so! For collapsible/portable types there are the larger/chunkier Primus No.54 and Optimus No.48, SVEA No.106 "discus" variants, Primus No.100 large-portable silent variants (4138 silent burner type or a 4043 Lipstick with 4010/4005 Silent Cap) and of course the competitor 100 silent types. For oddball/unusual variants there are the likes of the Parasene Mighty Atom 1/2-pints and converted specials. If portability isn't an issue I'd urge you to go with an easily fettled No.5 of some description. If you want the ultimate seek out a 5R (regulated) for something strong, stable, easily maintained and fully controllable in use If you'd like portability I'd urge you to try to find a 100-series with a silent burner (or lipstick with silent cap option), the 100s are awesome, versatile stoves Alec.
I've picked up two silent regulated burners, and a spare parts kit from a seller on ebay. (Juliands?) Unfortunately they're like $100 each, but a silent regulated kerosene burner with a built in cleaning needle AND spare parts is something that I couldn't resist. They are FANTASTIC.
@BenniHanna , if you have a regulated burner, you can burn CF, or with a restrictor tube, alcohol. Makes the stove far more versitile! Murph
