bought for 20 pounds on ebay ..had some helpful advice from Driftwood on here the other day about wick replacement.. I used some twisted monel wire (used for securing shackles on boats) ..woodstove door seal rope and fuse wire to make a new wick .. I unraveled the stove rope (individual strands were a similar thickness to original ones) ..then wrapped some strands round the twisted monel wire that was identical length of the original and looped for removal ..then lashed the ropes on with the fuse wire which is tin an lead so should last a good long time. I had an interesting green flame for a while ..but normal now and I guessed the amount of stands to use right as I had a good flow of meths.. I also decided to put a neoprene seal in the lid so meths does not evaporate..I remove lid when in use. I am really happy with its performance..Great stove.
Maybe having the lid off is not great as lighting is a little flared up ..I will try just removing the neoprene seal and useing stove with lid on ..
Nice work! How thick was the wire you used for the wick? I have a couple of similar stoves that I’m thinking of cleaning up as winter projects. -R
The pic is the main wire and I decided to use this for binding on the rope too as I was worried the fuse wire would melt ..probably would not but I worry ..you need to have a few good long burns to settle the wick and get blueness
I know it's been mentioned on here before, but brass (not brass coated) floristry/picture/jewellery wire is easily found, cheap, easily worked and doesn't corrode. For wick wrapping something vaguely close to 0.4mm works well.
This monel wire is easily found online and has been used for years in marine environments as it will not corrode I found the wrapping at each end fine with the same diameter wire as the rod it makes no difference to the output
Has anybody tried replacing the wick in a stove like this with multiple brass rods as shown on this Punker 1? Punker 1 enamelled domestic stove @presscall do you recall what the diameter of the rods was? -R
@IRM One-and-a-half millimetres as I recall, but it won’t be critical. Stripped single-core lighting cable would serve I suppose.
Hmm… it looks like the rods would be about 20cm in length and the inner diameter of the turm tube perhaps a shade under 8mm. That looks to be less than on your punker. That makes for an inner cross sectional area of roughly 50 sq. mm. A 1.5mm rod is 1.76 sq. mm. I figure that means something like 20 rods and the best price I can find is around £1.50 for 300cm lengths. All told that’s somewhat more than the stove cost. OTOH, 4m of 1.5mm brass wire is less than a fiver. Or I might just go with strands of stove rope I already have… -R
If you want to try the brass option, the wire will be fine- cut to lengths, straighten out os best you can, then roll back and forth between two hard flat surfaces to straighten fully. Like making clay pot coils/snakes... or bread dough for plaited loaves. You know what I mean!
I take it the rods are to slow the flow a bit and are there to stop the alchohol boiling..I played with my turm with no wick in it just out of curiosity and it sounded like a crazy morse code machine as the meths boiled in the tube..and it pissed meths out too fast with too much flame.
