I found this Optimus 88 or 124 at the Dump Shop today mixed up on the kitchen shelf for the price of 50c a piece, Stove was missing, and enquiries to the staff produced blank stares, but for a total of $2 NZD I am still very happy, there's some surface oxidizing but looks like it will clean up okay. Tried some other pots as not a fan of Aluminum and found a Trangia 27 inner and outer and Trangia 28 mini frypan all fit and stow together nicely with the 88/124 windshield. Really stoked now just need to find an serviceable SVEA 123r...
Nice find. Should be easy finding a stove -- Svea 123r burners missing the brass windscreen/pot support can be relatively inexpensive.
Welcome to CCS @Fester A good find, the oxide on the aluminium surfaces will clean up with a scrubbing.
Found a 123r stove, it came with a stainless steel Sigg Tourist cookset, can't fire it up yet as tank filler cap o-ring is perished. Big size difference between the Sigg and the Optimus 88.
Found a suitable fuel cap gasket in my big box of bits and tried it out, burner wouldn't turn off turning key either way, so reset needle which didn't work. Tried pulling spindle out but it would not come out, didn't want to risk damage to graphite packing so just snugged it all back up a bit tighter, it all was basically finger tight when I received it. Whether I got the needle right this or spindle was too loose, I don't know but it works perfectly now just a little candle at the end. I think that this was about 3 clicks. Boiled some water, then decided to see how terrible the weird dimpled frypan was at frying eggs. Was pleasantly surprised, aside from me getting the flame too high I think the Optimus 88 may fry eggs better than a Trangia.
Good on you! I find the dimples go a long way to mitigate the problem of all the grease pooling at one side, if the ground is the least uneven.
