Personally I would not suggest the 111B as the stove to learn how to use a classic stove. I would recommend a simple kerosene stove. Like a plain 111 or an Optimus 00.
If you order a new NRV make sure it is a quality made one. Especially ensure yourself that the pip is made out of Viton (FKM) rubber and not cheaper and less chemical resistant materials. When I was new to this hobby I ordered once rubber rings that were clearly made of non chemical resistant materials. After a few months they were completely eaten away. I also woud suggest you to use a plastic washer for easier tightening and easier extraction when needed again. Non-return Valve Washer. HDPE. Pack of 3 - The Fettlebox
Out of curiosity then is there a technique to dismantle nrv with out breaking it like I did? It seemed pretty solid
Just be gentle. Don't apply too much force and use relatively small tools instead of too lage heavy tools. After also breaking one or two NRV's I started using a pair of pliers on the bulged end instead of a NRV tool and a small screwdriver with a flat head on the side that faces the inside of the fuel tank. The screwdriver should be a good fit. If its too thin the force will be directed to the outsides of the notch instead of evenly spread out along the length of the notch. The result is then that the thin brass wil break. It really shouldn't take a lot of force to screw a NRV open. If you don't trust it then try to soak the NRV in kerosene of WD40 first.
Just wanted to thank everyone for all the advice it’s appreciated I find it all very interesting. I do a bit of camping and enjoy using old cooking gear rather than some modern gas burner. I am now finding my self looking at adverts for old Optimus stoves
@Tez I don't know if this is a permanent issue but your pics aren't showing for some people, maybe everyone. Its better to upload the pics here directly. It's pretty intuitive but give a shout if you want guidance. What I & others see:
@Spiritburner ah thank you never knew I could. This was result of my diy. But lesson learnt. Couple of spare nrv on there way. Also waiting for my service kit from fettlebox . Then see what we can do with it
Ok and it goes on. So have nice nrv ready to go. Next I am looking at servicing the fuel cap. It’s refusing to dissemble so far as in as in unscrewing the hex in the top. I can get a replacement cap that will fit but it has a manual screw type pressure release ontop. Which I guess defeats the object ?
Think I have found a fuel cap to fit off eBay but it states it’s two way. Is that ok ? It claims to work with the 111 among others
If you bought a complete new pump valve assembly, there is no guarantee the seal inside it is of a suitable material for the job- best to replace it with a Viton seal unless you know that is what is inside already. A fuel cap with an air release screw would be dangerous on this stove- if opened inadvertently it would release volatile vapour.
thank you so I have service kit on the way so I can fit the viton seals. All that remains is to find a fuel cap. As I say there is on one eBay but it’s a 2 way so not sure if correct even though states it’s for the 111. Determined to get this started up now once safe
Two-way? I have not heard that term used before but it could refer to a cap that works with a small (mini) pump. If so, it is a little more complex than the simple cap and therefore, in my opinion at least, might be less reliable in the long run. They are intended for use on the Svea 123, Optimus 8r, and variants thereof, as an aid in cold-weather. All that said, it is likely to work on your stove. I just perused that web site and yes one seller has what they call a 2-way cap that is for use with the mini-pump. Another seller (in Taiwan) has the standard cap.
Well I thought I cracked it last night. Got all the seals done but it failed the water test this morning. Bit stumped there is only one way to put them on . Ordered gallon panel wipe last night to. I jumped the gun https://youtube.com/shorts/Yyu5anOFZ_A?si=uDbxO374D9dhK4Nc
Photos of the filler cap seal in place would help, the pump valve can leak due to Viton seals being a higher shore hardness than the originals. Try stretching the spring a little, make sure everything is clean and the seating surfaces are undamaged.
