Hi All, I picked up an old Companion safari 1700 and I'm struggling to find a bottle to fit what is already there. I tried getting a new house but 3/8th and 1/4 inch fittings were all a no go. I know that the old Companion bottles will fit it but they are hard to find. Preferably I'd use a modern swap and go with it just for ease of filling etc. Any direction would be greatly appreciated!
Hi Conner Nice solid stove those. BCF or similar sell an adaptor from a companion hose to a standard POL fitting although the pressure may be different affecting performance slightly. Did your stove come with the collapsible stand? Regards Scott B
Hi Scot, Cheers, I took it to BCF and couldn't find any adapted or hose that actually fit onto the stove side. The only fittings were 1/4in and 3/8th in which didn't seem to screw on. It didn't come with the stand no. But also I found a bottle that's compatible with the current hose. Not sure if anywhere will fill an old bottle for me though. May be unsafe?
Hi Conner Can you not just purchase another companion bottle? I too have been running on old bottles that will soon be empty and are to old to fill, The POL adapter I meant goes on the gas bottle end of the hose. To fit standard swap n go bottles See image Regards Scott B
What is the fitting that goes on this stove called? Im tringle to find a new hose to use the small 1pds bottles
I have the same stove. I would just get a new gas line made up using your existing fittings. Professionally, not with hose clamps ( hose clamps might not fit under the stove).
@Connor Millikin I would like to understand your dilemma but am confused by the conversation. The image you first show is the double burner brass assembly and my understanding is that the hoses you have found so far do not fit that brass assembly? Is that correct? Do you have the hose that fits that assembly (when you got the stove), and at the other end I am presuming it is a standard Companion fitting. If that is the case Bunnings have the BOM (green propane cylinder) fitting that adapts the BOM fitting to a male Companion left hand thread which your original Companion hose would screw straight onto. Is the problem the hose connection to the brass burner assembly or is it at the cylinder end?
The problem is at the cylinder end, i have the original hose of the stove that is made to go on big cylinders, but i want to use the small green ones, i found a gas regulator that fits on those canisters but my current hose does not fit. Do you have a link for that adapter?
And i actually tried an adapter but i did not work because the stove needs a regulator, i dont know if you understand now, sorry english is not my first language. This is the current hose that i have and this is the adapter that did not work
Your picture of the stove isnt very good. If the burners have lots of small holes there should not be a regulator. It is designed to work at tank pressure.
Oh really? I tried it but the flames were big i could not control them, was pretty sure it needed one
No regulator. When you say green bottle, are you sure that has the same fuel mix as the larger LPG bottle the stove is designed for. I use mine with a 2.5kg LPG, refillable canister. It does have a tap on the cylinder, but no regulator on the fuel line.
@Fredo Your English is quite good but it's a mystery why you are getting large flames. Yes really! I have this stove and I have pulled it apart fully when restoring it and found nothing that looked like a regulator. The only thing in the stove other than the hose and simple burners is the burner assembly and that seemed to be just an assembly that was empty and split the piping to the two burners. Type the following into Google: " is the Companion Safari stove a high pressure direct stove or a low pressure stove utilising a regulator." Here is the answer: It is designed to be connected directly to an unregulated gas cylinder (usually a 3/8" BSP LH connection) without the use of a separate, intermediate low-pressure regulator. I had trouble with a blocked jet and this is more common on high pressure direct connect LPG stoves. I cleaned the orifice and the stove works well on a standard BOM Propane bottle with a BOM to Companion 3/8" LH thread adapter. Hope this helps but not sure why your stove is flaming up as you have mentioned. Yes a good point but just propane. The green cylinder is stated to be 100% propane. In Australia our big LPG cylinders are stated to 'primarily contain propane'.
Having a POL fitting on the hose , I'm wondering if the jets have been changed to run the stove with a regulator on low pressure. It would beneficial in cold conditions.
