I took this stove apart cleaned it. Put it back together and it wont lite. I know the cleaning needle is there and working. I pump it about 15 times, turn the red nob 1/4 turn and the cleaning nob thing is pointing out from stove. It has new kerosene in it. What am I doing wrong?
Kerosene you say. It's meant to run on Coleman fuel is one thing. Even with kerosene in the tank you'd expect some fuel to dribble out of generator if the tank was pressurised, though it wouldn't light too well without priming - if using kerosene that is. If there's no fuel, likely culprit is the fuel/air valve stem in the tank - born out of experience of having to strip and clean dozens of the things. Kerosene eh? John
Well that's it then. Someone told me to use kerosene. I will fill it with Coleman and re try. Thanks.
John, at a quarter turn, you'll be running on the fuel/air mix off the top of the tank, kero won't generate enough vapor to kick off and start. Should run right as rain on the right fuel! Murph
Almost all American stoves use Naptha, aka Coleman fuel, white gas, panel wipe. The 502 is no exception. It simply will not run on kerosene, fresh or otherwise. I have several 502's from one that was new in the box when I got it to one that looks for all the world like it got hit by a mortar. They all run fine on Coleman Fuel or Wal-Mart's Ozark Trails brand camp fuel (same thing). Oh, and contrary to European practice, priming is not needed or wanted. Follow the instructions on the fount and you'll be fine. Gerry
Uh guys, the 502 *will* run off kero, and there are posts and pics to prove it here... (Coleman lanterns also handily run on kero, too) It's the priming that's the problem... To run the 502 on kero, prime using meths (denatured alcohol); make sure it's a good prime, then light on low-to-med... Will burn kero nicely! The suitcase will also run on kero (best with both burners going)... But priming the suitcase genie and getting it started is a tad tricky... Willie on the Gulf of Mexico
