I just picked up this stove along with a 228F lantern (also 1970) from my local Facebook marketplace. I got both for 50 bucks. :content:

The seller told me he inherited these from his father. So, I think they are original owner items.

The stove is grungy but still had fuel in the tank and so I figured to try lighting it. Well, it lit right up from the beginning before any cleaning, which it will need a lot of for sure. It’s not running a blue flame, so I will be fixing that issue. This is my first 413, so I am happy to add it to the collection. I’m guessing this is the predecessor to the newer 414 Powerhouse stove still being manufactured. Maybe?

I’ll post some after pics when I’m done.

I know this is a stove forum, but here is a picture of the 228F I picked up along with the stove.

Looking at the fount alone, and the rust, I'd have gone a tenner on the stove for parts, and naught more. Be concerned how far the fount was from a rust-through and suprise!!

Up here, I buy 421, 424, and 425's for a ten-spot, and in very good condition, no rust, all the bits and tits in order. Occasionally, I find one some twit used auto fuel in, drain the tank, push CF through and let 'er run for a hour or so, and Bob's your uncle!

One, I needed a bit of stout mason's twine and a bit of rag as a pull through to get the spider webbing out of the burner tubes, easy peasy, quick and easy.

Andrew, Good for you! Looking forward to seeing the pics when you get that puppy shooting out blue flames.

Murph, Stoves sure go for less in your part of the country. Around here the demand is higher and so are the prices.

Andrew, make sure an light the stove with the little lever on the tank in the up position, and leave it up! for about 30 seconds or so.

In the pic, your lever is in the down position.

That’s really great you can get stoves that cheap up where you live. Here in the Atlanta Metro area, prices aren’t as low. $25 for the 228F and $25 for the 413G isn’t too bad.

I’ve already completely disassembled the 228F lantern, cleaned it, oiled it, added an eccentric block, and it now runs like a champ.

Giving the stove a really close look in bright light, there is actually no rust on the fount. There is some rust inside the stove body and on the outside hardware (handle, latches). It is just really grimy all over. I’m going to spend some time on it for sure.

Here is a bright “before photo” as a reference for after I finish working on the 413G.

    Thank you very much

    @Majicwrench
Thank you. I had the lever up for about a minute, then turned it down and lit the auxiliary burner. I’ll get to the bottom of it eventually. Plus, I was also using whatever old fuel was already in the fount just to see if it would light.

How long did you let it burn for? Sometimes just letting burn for awhile will help. My guess is you need to clean the burner rings.just remember what order they go in when you put them back.

Not long. I just wanted to see if it would light with the fuel that was in the fount. If I have to take apart the burner rings, I will definitely make sure to stack them in the same order.

This stove was not intended to be a shelf queen. Basically, I did not have a 413G, so I bought it. And, it works, although it shows many years of frying bacon…

Pictured is after a quick 30 minute breakdown/disassembly and cleaning/degreasing. It will take a lot more cleaning with solvent to get it any better, but it is at least clean now and free of cobwebs and dirt. I can deal with the rust on the stove body, but fortunately there is no rust on the fount. I may repaint the fount.

    More work to be done…

It’s hard to capture the lighting in photos, but trust me that nice blue flames are emitting from both burners.

New fuel and a cap full of Seafoam.

@Andrew Johanson , that stove looks a darn sight better cleaned. In the photo, it looked worse than it actually was!

Here, a lot of guys got the suitcase stoves for deer hunting camps, there weren't as many places to put on the feedbag as there are now!

So, come rummage and garage sale season, the stoves hit the tables and benches, to be sold for a pittance. Usually, there's one or two full cans of fuel to be had for a buck a gallon!!!!

    Thank you, @Murph

Thank you for clarifying the situation in your area of the world. Sounds like a good deal for collectors.

Although it is running with a blue flame, I have noticed that the stove has a sort of pulse flow at times. It’s a slow pulse the likes of an old locomotive rhythm.

The video wouldn’t load for me, but if it is mostly burning well I would just run a tank or two through it. Do all your cooking for a week on it and it just might be all it needs.

Ah, interesting. Not what I expected. If it were mine I would 1) brush out the U manifold using a long test tube brush. 2) disassemble and clean the burner rings. 3) unscrew, disassemble and clean the generator. If that didn’t fix it I would disassemble and clean the fuel pickup from the tank. While it’s out you might as well rinse and derust the tank.
