I was checking the pump tube on one of my Opti 111's today and noted Kero in the bottom of the tube. I had recently replace the lead seal using one from A&H. I pulled the NRV assuming a bad pip and the lead did not come out with the NRV. Any ideas on how to get to the bottom of this problem (pun intended). I also thought about copper, but I agree that it may be a risky option. I am tempted to try plastic as noted in another thread. Thinking about using the yogart lid, or equivalent donar material. If I recall, Gary did some testing on this, and found it to be satifactory. Any advice would be appreciated!
AJ, if I am reading it right, there is no lead washer or the washer is left at the base of the NRV? If its still there and stuck to the bottom (and does its job), I would leave it there. Otherwise, your best bet would be engine gasket at Kragen as its easy to punch and cut to size. I did read something about the milk carton and all and some claim it does work. Ron
Hey Ron, thanks for the input. The washer is stuck at the bottom, just worried that it may be misaligned. Plus, I have never had one stuck in the threads at the bottom. Normally they come out stuck to the NRV. I would like to find a good solution to the gasket issue because I would hate to have this happen out in the field and not have the tools to fix it. You can fix a bad pip in the field if you have your wrench, but if the gasket gets stuck and leaks your out of luck. I guess with Kero it's not that big of a deal, but just the same it bugs me!
hdpe milk carton does work & is basically the same as used on the likes of the Nova NRV, but is a bit thinner. The Nova uses a traditional style NRV. It works for me. I sent plenty out to people FOC & heard no negative feedback. Any problems guys?
Hi Guys, Thanks for the info and the link, it was very informative! This morning I ordered a sheet of lead from McCaster Car, but I am thinking I will try the hdpe solution as well. I am still troubled as to how to remove the remains of the lead seal from the bottom of the tube.
Hi Al. Junkie. If you are concerned about a lead ring at the bottom of the pump tube you need a fishing tool. Take piece of thin, stiff wire and put a right-angle bend in it about, about 1/8in from one end. Insert the tool into the tube and see what you can hook. A torch can help! This tool can be useful for retrieving pieces of dead leather washer as well. Best Regards, Kerophile.
