Greetings All. My interest in pressure lighting (Coleman lamps, Tillys) and mantle lamps (Aladdin mantle lamps) has lead me here by serendipity. I recently received a box of lamp parts that included a cute little stove. It looks inexpensive, old, and I think it must have been designed for alcohol. Can anyone tell me a little more about my find. I hope this stove thing doesn't turn into a new interest and hobby but I think I like them too. Regards, Ed

Edited: I see there have been a few of these on an auction site in the recent past, all look much like mine but maybe those ones look to have a nice finish on them. Does the pre-heater stay under the burner after heating or should it swing out after the stove is going? As you can tell I have it fired up and boiling water already.

    welcome Prindel.
That looks like a alcohol stove of some kind.
Fill up with meth, and try it.

Before you know you have a problem, you will propably have bought yourself some pressure stoves. And then, when your house is full of them, there is no cure for the Stovie Syndrom, and if there were one, I would not want to be cured. Its quite common to start with a lamp, or a simple stove, or a blowtourch or something like that.

Greate pics. Some picks of your lamps and other stuff would be nice too.

    Take care, and happy stovehunting.

Hi Rune, No Cure? I must have it then as I have a blowlamp I recently restored and another on the way. Oh my, where to place anything along with the lamps. Yes, let me see, many lamps, then a blowtorch, now a simple stove, just as you discribed!

    Regards, Ed

    Nice.
So the Coleman uses kerosene. I have one of those.
The blowtorch I would love to have.

    Hi Rune,

The Coleman is stamped Instant Lite on the bottom but also has QC stamped, a transition between the Quick-Lite and Instant-Lite and it works well on Kerosene. I have not had the internal piping out of the font to look at the routing of vapor and liquid but tried it on Kerosene and it worked just fine.

Do you want me to look for a blowtorch for you this summer at garage sales? They turn up for about $10 with regularity. Then ship it by the cheapest means. The one pictured I paid $1, plus shipping, it turned out to be in quite good condition.

We lived in Alaska for many years until two years ago, the couple across the street from us are Norwegian and travel to Norway every year, I could have just sent a blowtorch with them. My wife is part Norwegian, part Swedish, now third generation American. Regards, Ed

Both of these Colemans are running on Kerosene, on the left is a 134P Instant-Lite and the one on the right is a 1919-24 CQ " Quick-Lite".

Thank you Prindel, but I do not collects blowtourches. I have a few though.
I collect preassure stoves, but, .....
I find a ski burner from H?vik last year, and a Aladdin stove, and some Optimus 350CP.

And there are always some Trangia, and a nice tcheckish Vari?c
    Both meth burners.
Not things I collect, but I always enjoy nice things wich burns :D
    WHat do I collect?
Mainly Historical, and military stoves. Norwegian stoves (H?vik and Fuhrmeister) And swedes.
I buy some Coleman 400 and 530 on the Ebay, and sell them here. They are Easy enough to use, so even Norwegians will get them light.
    Take care
The Stovie syndrom have no cure

    Hi there,
Alcohol fuelled, made by Glogau of Chicago around turn of 20th C. They do seem to be fairly common. More for domestic use than camping - in a bedsit maybe? I'd turn the wick out of the way once lit. Mine burns nicely but not the fastest alcohol burner I've used.

Hi Lynn, the stove uses Denatured Alcohol, and only that fuel, also called Methanol, Meths in Australia. Fill the stove half full through the wick holder opening on the side of the tank. after letting the wick absorb the fuel you light the little arm with the wick and then turn it so it is under the burner head. In a couple of minutes it will have heated up the burner enough so that the fumes will ignite and the burner will start by itself. At this point you can remove the preheater by rotating it from under the burner and putting the cap back on it. I found that mine works surprisingly well and boiled a quart of water in a few minutes. From what I have found they were made early in the 1900s but I don't know how long they were made.

    Regards, Ed

    Lynn,

May I ask how much you paid for your stove? I got mine as a lamp with two other lamps (parts), I promply got rid of the two lamps and kept the cute little stove.

    Thanks,

    Ed

i paid about 20$ canadian -- that stated i don't really have any idea if i paid too much or too little -- no idea the value -- i just really liked the look of it and after spending time on this site i just had to have it -- i like the idea that it was likely actually used in a bedsit or nursery way back when -- i think i have caught the stovie bug -- off to buy some meths and play -- thanks for your answer -- i was scared to light it without knowing a bit more -- thanks and peace, lynn

I have recently purchased one of these Glogau stoves. It is hard to believe that it is over 100 years old.

Mine did not have a wick in the pre-heater tube. I made a wick, quite similar to the wicks used in the Optimus 8R stoves. It went in into the tube fairly easy. I guess there has to be a wick in the smaller tube.

The first time I fired it up, I was amazed at the output. This thing gets hot fast.

I have had a problem in putting it out. It seems to burn so furiously that puffing on the flame is futile. I use a large metal tin can and just drop it over the whole thing to smother the flames.

A previous post mentioned that these stoves were intended for nursery or sick room usage. Maybe my Glogau is some what of an overachiever but there is no way I would ever use it in the house.

If anyone has any original history, literature or instructions on this stove, I would be very interested in obtaining a copy.

My thanks to those who made previous posts on this stove.

    Hi Ken,

I think the stoves were used in flats, rented rooms, anywhere a kitchen wasn't available. There seems to be a few of these around, certainly not rare, all the more amazing because of the age. Maybe a testament to how well the little guys worked. Not sure about your mention of over achiving on the burner, mine has a nice blue flame that looks just right for the job. As far as using it in the house I don't hesitate to fire it up and use it when I like, it burns so clean as methanol stoves do and the base is quite stable. I rather enjoy making tea, mocha or heating up some soup with it. You quickly get an idea how much fluid is needed to do a job of heating a cup or pot, I then let it consume what little fuel is left and put it up dry. Note: (Swing the preheater out of the way and cap it when the stove starts working).

    Regards,

    Ed

Thanks for the information. My Glogau tends to burn with a rather large yellow reddish flame. My fuel is Isopropyl Alcohol of about 90 % concentration.

I plan to buy some Methanol and see if I can get a more manageable blue flame that will not blacken the coffee pot bottom so badly.

You are absolutely correct in your comments regarding the use of
    Iso-Propyl Alcohol instead of Methanol.

I was amazed t the difference. My Glogau stove burns with a itute modest sized,
blue reddish flame when Methanol is used as a fuel

When I substitute 95 % Iso-Propyl, the flame gets a nasty yellow red color with a lot
    of soot.

I have since found that the best way to buy Methanol is to buy the 12 ounce
bottles of automobile gas fuel tank additive.

    Thank you for your assistance,

    Ken H.

Above post has the word itute. I have no idea what it means either.

    Typographical error.
