I've been developing my fanhood of this useful little package. Considering the well publicised fanaticism for the 123s,....I wonder why the 71E isn't more popular and/or talked about?

Looking at the total package, I can't help but see it as an 'improved' 123.

Great outift, as was the 2 pan K. I like them & I know Ian is a big fan. These predate the 123 by many years. In some ways the Svea 123K & it's later incarnation the Optimus 88 outfit were more akin to the 71E & K.

It's surely true that there's been a lot more talk here over time about the Svea 123 than the Primus 71 or the Optimus 80.

In my own case my preference for the 123 is inseperable from the Sigg kit. I wish the others fit in the Sigg....

    Ross,

Is the 71E not the two pan set up? Am I calling a K an E?

There was a time in the past I wasn't sure & I'm pretty sure I have seen pictures on collectors sites of the E labelled as a K which added to the confusion. There may even be some on CCS which I hopefully should find & edit.

71 - plain stove, no tin

71L - stove in tin, hinged lid & front

71D - stove in round 2 part windshield with pan supports (some of the best 'non-slip' supports I have seen). No pans

    71E - as D but with pan & lid

    71K - as D but with 2 pans & lid

Some of the variants, seemingly using the same letter suffix, had a one part windshield & a corresponding bigger pan(s) & even on the set with the 2 part windshield there was a variant with a slightly bigger pan.

Ian's talk of these at Newark & your post have got me looking at these with renewed affection - thanks for that. I bought one of these at a junk shop before I even realized I was a collector.

If you have any info that contradicts the above, including misinformation on CCS it would be useful to see it.

    Ross and Dutchmike,

What I had thought was an 'E' remains so. The other letters match as I know them too, although the 'D' designation is a new to me.

One nice thing of the pot set vs. modern equivalents,.....the pan/pot are made of a reasonably thick aluminum. It's actually useable!!!!

Thanks to both for the confirmation.

I got a 71 e about two weeks ago. What a great stove! At first it only burned on one side of the roarer. I spent ages on this problem before I realised that the burner head had been crushed. I gave it a squeeze in a hobby vice and now it is as good as new.
So far things I like better than my 123r are that I can release the pressure after use without desembling it and it has a nice deep priming cup.
But my 123r is just better... I don't know why. If it would burn kerosene it would be the perfect stove!

HI Team. Sorry I havent been about of later (did anyone notice? Probably not but thats ok, change of life style and all that, no PC right now)

A month or so back I picked up an E (pot and pan), nice little tool! Somewhat chubbier than the 123/Globetrotter combo, but the E pot holds a goodly amount and the lid/frypan is doable. Nice big fuel tank too.

So yah, good and under rated tool, I'll be using mine more.

Hello all, the list by Ross seems to cover most, if not all from the 71 programme, but there is also the change where the seperate windshield annex pot support became an integral part of the structure in which the burner nestles. Consequently there is indeed a "chubby" version as NZMike describes his Primus, and the taller looking one where the outer pot needed the extension to accomodate the higher structure inside.

There is some variation in the sizes of stove and cook-kit which fall under the heading 'Primus 71E'.
The 2-piece widshield & potstand arrangementbest accomodates the small tank 71 and can be found in 2 different sizes of pot:

    71E_MS_setup.jpg

The one-piece windshield/potstand described by Dutch Mike, best accomodates the large tank 71 and the stove can remain assembled whilst it is stowed in the larger pot:

Here are the 3 variant which I have, pictured together to show their comparative sizes:

Thank you, Ian, for pointing this out. I did not realise the E was introduced when the 71 had the smaller tank still; surely a 30's vintage? So this is a case of being the chubbier of the three, and it seems then NZMike has the "chubiest".

    Regards,
    Dutchmike

I try to avoid looking at stove and pan set combinations - too much temptation.
