Got some yesterday - from Livermores in Swansea - Five Litres of Panel wipe for about ?11.85 (inc Vat).

Runs a treat in the 442, Lights if anything a little faster and less "flarey" than unleaded

The Tin says Toluene/Xylene and 1-5% methanol which sounds fair enough.

Hi, Please read attached; It may be that stove collectors are immune, but I doubt it.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1.5 How can toluene affect my health?
A serious health concern is that toluene may have an effect on your brain. Toluene can cause headaches, confusion, and memory loss. Whether or not toluene does this to you depends on the amount you take in and how long you are exposed. Low-to-moderate, day-after-day exposure in your workplace can cause tiredness, confusion, weakness, drunken-type actions, memory loss, nausea, and loss of appetite. These symptoms usually disappear when exposure is stopped. Researchers do not know if the low levels of toluene you breathe at work will cause any permanent effects on your brain or body after many years. You may experience some hearing loss after long-term daily exposure to toluene in the workplace.

If you are exposed to a large amount of toluene in a short time because you deliberately sniff paint or glue, you will first feel light-headed. If exposure continues, you can become dizzy, sleepy, or unconscious. You might even die. Toluene causes death by interfering with the way you breathe and the way your heart beats. When exposure is stopped, the sleepiness and dizziness will go away and you will feel normal again.

If you choose to repeatedly breathe in toluene from glue or paint thinners, you may permanently damage your brain. You may also experience problems with your speech, vision, or hearing, have loss of muscle control, loss of memory, poor balance, and decreased mental ability. Some of these changes may be permanent.

Toluene may change the way your kidneys work, but in most cases, the kidneys will return to normal after exposure stops. If you drink alcohol and are exposed to toluene, the combination can affect your liver more than either compound alone. This phenomenon is called synergism. Combinations of toluene and some common medicines like aspirin and acetaminophen may increase the effects of toluene on your hearing.

In animals, the main effect of toluene is on the nervous system. Animals exposed to moderate or high levels of toluene may also show slightly adverse effects in their liver, kidneys, and lungs.

Several studies have shown that unborn animals were harmed when high levels of toluene were breathed in by their mothers. When the mothers were fed high levels of toluene, the unborn animals did not show any structural birth defects, although some effects on behavior were noted. We do not know if toluene would harm your unborn child if you drink water or breathe air containing low levels of toluene, because studies in people are not comprehensive enough to measure this effect. However, if you deliberately breathe in large amounts of toluene during your pregnancy, your baby can have neurological problems and retarded growth and development.

Studies in workers and in animals exposed to toluene indicate that toluene does not cause cancer. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) have not classified toluene for carcinogenic effects. The EPA has determined that toluene is not classifiable as to its human carcinogenicity.

Yep, I tried panel wipe in a 123r, 5 minutes and the dizziness started. Personally I use petrol, yes yes, I know all the points about additives being dangerous to health & clogging your stove up, but if you get a good combustion there is likely to be less 'crap' from one stove than from a few passing cars. As for clogging, never seen a sign of it, 'tis possible that American petrol is more likely to do this, I bought a bike from California, it had stood for a few months and the carbs were gummed beyond saving, as the petrol dried out it left a sort of varnish that no chemical (including carb cleaner) or heat would touch. I do, as a precaution, change the petrol a couple of time a year in stoves that don't get much use.

    Fair points.
Although the americans warn us about the "Gumming Problem" with automotive unleaded I've managed to run 3 gallons (15 litres) of it thru a couple of stoves and, as yet, so sign of a problem - You could be right perhaps U.S. fuel is different stuff.

The hazards from Toluene/Xylene are not markedly different from those of other C7/C8 hydrocarbons and not really very different from those of any hydrocarbon vapours - all need a degree of respect..

My favourite toluene hazard - was one described by a violin making uncle - He was persuaded that nitrating the oil base of a varnish in order to get a pleasing red colour - was perhaps not too clever.

The setup drawn in a 17th Century Italian book had the mixing vessel behind sandbags and being stirred by an (expendable) small boy.....

Yup, american gas is bad, california mixture is worse and now they're adding alcohol to it so it attracts water. you get varnish with massive rust !!! When I come back from Mexico every year, I usually bring back 5-10 gallons of mex gas, mixed with boat oil. works great in the lawnmower and has NO additives :D Lasts for a year, too!

It's got two UN numbers 1263 and 1993. I suspect that the UN numbers are usage based rather than formulation based.

They're all to do with the hazards associated with transportation rather than use. Check out Wikipedia:-

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UN_number

and explore some of the links. Some substances have their own UN number, whereas others e.g. 1263 refer to a group of substances with a common usage, in this case, 'paint related substances'...

Some cans of panel wipe I've had have been 1263 and others have been 1268. I did get a can with another number on it but I've forgotten what that was - old age rather than toluene probably  Whatever the original contents, they would be oxidised to carbon dioxide and water in the flame...

I've long wondered if the UN number is part of the Hazchemcodes seen on road tankers. Petrol tankers have 3YE 1270 on them. The 3YE bit tells the emergency services how do deal with the contents in the case of a spillage - the 'E' stands for 'evacuate' as I recall - and I wonder if the 1270 bit is the UN number for petrol.

We need a firefighter to help us out here - Biffa??

I just checked my current supplies, and it appears that I have "Low Boiling Point Hydrogen Treated Naptha". No mention of Toluene or other exotica, but it's noted as UN3295 !

Perhaps we should have a game of Toxic Substance Bingo :D ;)

UN3295 is 'Hydrocarbons, Liquid N.O.S. - so panel wipe would be appropriate under that number, too:-

If you request a saftey data sheet on the panel wipe when you buy it it should have a CAS No on it this gives you an idea whats in it

    COLEMAN FUEL is 68410-97-9
    this site http://www.chemindustry.com/apps/chemicals
where you can type the number in searches and confirms whats in in it we are looking for naptha petroleum disstillates and it appears there is more than one kind of naptha!

stuff i am using is 64741-84-0 it seems ok so far

think as said above the UN number is more about handling

    cheers pete
