First I de-rusted the part in my washing soda electrolytic rust removal bath. Then heated to red-heat and plunged it into used engine oil, like this: Some stoves must need steel parts re-blackening 13 years on, no rust

Would used motor oil give better result than un-used motor oil? I have used un-used motor oil with same method but results are not so perfect. Maybe soot & dirt in used motor oil helps oil to stick into surface and together they give good protection. Varnish with same method gives quite good result and I have used it time to time.
