Bordes...

I've been watching what Borde stoves have been selling for of late, and am amazed that they are regularly over $300 USD - one on fleabay closed at $381 USD the other day. As Rocky would say to Bullwinkle, "hokey smokes!" These prices are stunning!

Is there any estimate as to total production on Borde stoves? I get the "cult" factor behind the prices, but wondering about the available population/rarity for stoves in circulation.

Also, is there any way to tell a Bader-made stove from an "original" Borde-made stove (other than the differing burner designs on the earliest ones)? I have what I think is a 1960's or 1970's version (with the burner off the side, rather than on top), but would love to be able to narrow it down. It has a label that indicates it was sold by the "Phillips-Leaus Co" of Denver. Can anyone in that neck of the woods date this outfit?

I owned two at one time. The older one had the crossbow stamped near the burner. The newer one never had the stamp. Its swiss and crossbow was used by the swiss during the olden days. Not sure about the dating though.

About 5 years ago a guy put up about 1 per week MIB for a few months straight. Those sold for about $250 each. They obviously hold their value.

 

One of these days I am going to build one. Most likely won't look as pretty. Could be an interesting experiment.

 

I just let one go on the unmentionable place for $125 so as to help a buddy... oh well

Well, I now own four of those little Beasts, and love them all! Only the last one does not have the arrow, and that happens to be the one that Ron sold to me, just as he mentioned. I paid a price that was higher than I'd have liked, but well in line with that they are going for, now, and actually quite a bit less then some of the really high-priced ones today!! When all was said and done, I was very happy to have one of the newer Borde, and glad that Ron had left it unfired and with it's original tool, box, and paperwork! Thanks, Brother Ron!! 8)

Now, all that remains is for me to find one of the original Borde stoves, with the burner on the top of the tank! Thought I had one, a while back, but it was not to be, sad to say! So, I'll keep looking, and one day, maybe one of the older ones will make my Borde Family a nice, round number, at five!! 8) To me, the Borde stove is very well made, reliable, easy, and definitely usable, within it's original design intent. The ONLY reasons that someone might not enjoy owning and using Borde Bomb, would be if its original design intent does not fit into their needs, or they don't take the time to learn how to use this stove properly and safely, IMHO. Very hot you need to use the metal tank holder.

Here are a couple of images from my Borde. The first one shows the crossbow, which I gather guess means that this is an earlier one (Borde-made vs. Bader-made?). The other image shows the label of the retailer, "Phillips-Leaus Co" of Denver. Anyone ever heard of them?

It has the same dealer label About the same time I bought mine there was another with this label on ebay that also had the same fuel can and canvas case. I think those two items were added by the dealer to make the set a bit more attractive. The case has a wide belt loop on the back. Stove in box, windscreen and fuel can all fit nicely in the case. The fellow I bought my stove fro was in Colorado so I asked him about the dealer. He had no idea. Neither spelling yield any Google results.

You're right the label doesn't show. It's identical to yours. I posted the link to show the fuel can and case.

 

It is interesting that the label has a different spelling of the company name.
The city code, "Denver, 19, Colo", is old, as in pre zipcodes. I'd have look that up on the Internet.

 

I did look it up. I have a healthy respect for Wikipedia. (Add a tinge of doubt)

It is safe to assume that a label with a pre ZIP Code system 'MIGHT' be pre-1963.
Further reading indicates a program to phase in the new coding system. Some labels may have already been printed and may have lasted for quite some after the 1963 introduction of ZIP Codes.
Also, some citizens may have balked at the new system for several years.
I am sure the post office still delivered with the old code used in the address.

I am only writing this because of the possibility the Borde i just got is a known old one. But, with this code research, it 'may' not be as old as I hoped.

I remember the old postal "zones" from when I was a kid. Los Angeles had zones, of course, but Torrance had not yet been gobbled by the creeping megalopolis, so we did not. I remember when zip codes started -- yeah, it would have been about 1963.

So it sounds like your stove was first sold sometime between 1943 and 1963. I wonder what "Denver, 19" looks like today.
