Hi, I've just gotten an Otimus 111 swedisch army model with kerosen burner. The stove is in pretty good condition, looks like it has been used only a few times before. I am wondering about the fact, that the burner just sits on the bottom of the box. This lets the box become really hot and I mean really hot. The original paint starts blistering after just a few minutes of runtime and than actually burns of. You got to be carefull not to touch the box when the stove is running and make sure not to light the stove on any surface that is the least bit sensile to heat. I am affraid that if I put the stove on a piece of plywood it would start to burn under the stove after some time. Is that typical for the 111 or is there something wrong with my model? I would have expected the burner to be in a flying arrangement or at least with some kind of insulation like just a point contact beneath. The flame pattern looks Ok to me: blue flames comeing just out of the space between the burnercup and the flamering, no underburning. thanks Rolf
I always put mine on a piece of tree wood if it's set down on any surface that is not heat proof. Straight down on grass etc is fine. I must admit they do get a bit warm, this is quite normal Rolf
Hello and welcome RoJo, on my Hiker 111C the Silent burner doesn?t sit on the bottom of the case, thus the ground gets not as hot. As far as I remember the Hunter 8r gets hotter. To avoid burn marks on the ground a piece of tree wood helps
Hi Christoph, how is the Burner of the 111C supported? There got to be some kind of support to stop the tank - burner assembly from rotationg so much that the burner touches the bottom? Rolf
Hi Rolf, the burner is sliding upon a rail, a bended piece of metal which is holding the burner in line and keeps it about 1,5cm from the ground. Christoph
Hi Rolf My 111 Roarer are just resting on the bottom of the case, this have caused some discoloration, and this uses to be one of the first spots to start to be rusty inside the case. Spilling spirit when preheating may cause more discoloration. dsk
Rolf: As luck would have it I just took delivery of a straight 111 today, after reading this thread. This is my first 111. The roarer burner in it also rest directly on the bottom of the metal case. I am going to rehab this 111 and would like to avoid the heat/paint problem. I noticed that there is a little play in the burner that allows the burner to be lifted about 3/16 to 1/4 inch (2.54 cm. = 1 inch) away from the bottom of the case. I stopped at a tile shop and picked up a small thin square piece of tile to slip between the burner and case bottom prior to lighting it. Hopefully this will slow heat from transferring to the bottom of the case by metal to metal contact. It might be worth a try. Good luck. Gordon
