I have one of these, got it probably 15 years ago in Ontario, Canada. Does anyone know why this stove was put on the market? Is it a Svea competitor, slightly modernized. Seems to work the same as the Svea, or the Primus 71L which I also have. The fuel tank seems a decent size, too. Slightly fiddly to prime because of the separate windshield and pot support. As I recall, it didn't do too well in the wind. I've only ever seen one, mine. Just wondering if the historians know why this particular stove was made. Regards Dave
Optimus at that time had acquired the Svea name & the famous 123 so it wasn't a competitor. I think it was just meant to be a larger capacity (tank & pot) alternative to the 123R.
I was reading yesterday, as one is on Evilbay now, that the tank looks bigger was is about the same capacity. Doc has at least one I believe. Duane

Unfired? I only have one unfired stove I believe, the yellow XGK. Unfortunately, the Firefly got lit a week before I found a lightly used one. Duane
Thanks All. Steel tank, huh? I'll take a peek at those other posts. Mine has been fired, but only about a dozen times. Last night I had to replace the graphite packing as I was getting a flame. As well, I forgot the cleaning needle and when taking the spindle out broke one tooth off. Rumour has it that this is the Svea 123R burner. Anyone know if parts are interchangeable? If you get a flame at the stuffing box, like you did, you don't need to replace the packing or remove anything, just tighten the nut a little. I would take a file to the broken tooth, then see it is still works. Dan
Yes, the burner assembly is identical to the 123R. Same part numbers even. The larger tank, I guess was a reason for the makeover, but I figure it was also a way of "optimizing" the 123, to make it look more modern. The eagle 1000 has the feel of other optimus stoves from that period, like the Optimus 85 Loke, or 324(?)Rider. Black steel, brass, and red nylon bags. I guess they didn't want to just market their inherited oldtimers over and over again. I think there are a couple of design flaws in the 1000, that aren't there in the 123, (windscreen for example) so I'm not sure they did their best. I've made modifications to mine, with an extra windshield. Makes for better performance, but it's a bit fiddly setting it up.
The cleaning needle still works, but I'll probably order a new one. It does look a bit more modern, and since I dropped the cleaning needle down another notch blasts away just like my 71L. Fiddly is a great word to describe it, not really bad, just not as elegant and user-friendly as the Svea and 71L. Dave
I haven't the opportunity to take proper pictures at the moment, but as a matter of fact, I do have some photos on my computer from a while back. I have since progressed a little with the windshield from the doubled up kitchen foil, to a single sheet of heavier gauge aluminium flashing, that sits a little higher up. The important bit of R&D went into modding the pot supports, though. I guess the pictures are kinda self explanatory. The best part of it is that the pot supports and windshield once assembled form one unit that can be lifted on and off without coming apart. The pot is not the original item, but similar in size. A bit taller maybe. Everything along with the midipump and those plastic gas canister leg gizmos goes into the original nylon bag, so I'm quite happy with it now. Lots of small bits to loose in the white stuff though. My next improvement would be swapping the lower windshield to something more similar to the 123's. @Barneycanoe: How's the above sound for a fiddly setup Anyways, congrats on the stove, I think you'll grow to like it! /P
That is really great mod Pysen, the plastic legs are a good idea too. It sure makes that tall thin pot a lot more practical.
Very nice mods, particularly on the pot stands. The pot stands aren't nearly as stable as on a Svea 123. HJ
