    Hi All,

I recently acquired a Primus no41 from the local flea market. From the markings on the tank I believe it’s from 1954. I'm missing the fuel cap, does anyone know where I can find one? The size is not consistent with SVEA 123's.

The fuel pump appears to be stuck (I can rotate it and it clicks and I can get it to come out a little). Any thoughts of how to get it free other than oiling it ? or is this just user error ?

I would really like to make tea on this beautiful stove ! :D

I have no advice, but would like to congratulate you on such a nice catch! One of my grail stoves, for sure.

Nice score, can check to see if anything fits, someone may be along to help. AT = 1954.
    Duane
PS: looks like a cap off my Primus 5 fits, so find a same sized 1.75L stove.

The fuel cap on a 41 does not have a SRV so if you get something that fits all you will need is a viton seal.

The pump plunger is likely leather or rubber that has swollen in the pump tube. Boiling water in the tank and in the pump tube might help loosen things up.

Hi @Jazzman56 . Welcome to CCS.

The Primus No.41 spare parts listing from approx. 1954 shows the following:

    Tank Lid #4372
    Washer for above #4334

Base Camp does not list them, but has these:

    P4374 Lid with 'wings', Primus #1, #2, #3, #4 & #5 £ 4.50
    P4376
    Slotted lid, late Primus #1, #2, #3 & #5 £ 2.0

So certainly worth contacting him for information and help.

    Best Regards,
    Kerophile.

The 41 Primus is a great stove, In fact my car stove. I am sure you will eventually get the rod out without damaging the stove. You will find a suitable tank lid, even if you have to cut the wings off. Cutting the wings off is to fit it in the box. Mine works every time, I replaced the seals and leather so long ago I have forgotten when.
Well done finding a 41, they are usually hard to find,
    Cheers
    Rob

Thank you ! The word "Primus" grabbed my attention :D. Was very surprised to find it to be honest, not much usually comes up at the flea market (been keeping an eye out for a long time) !
Thank you Duane, lucky we don't have a SRV... makes it a bit easier to find. I'll try and find a replacement for a Primus 5. Much appreciated for your help !
Ahhh i didn't think of the pump plunger and boiling water.. i'll give that a go :). Where is the best place to get Viton seals ? The fettlebox ?
Hi Kerophile, much appreciated for your help ! I'll get in contact with base camp at some point. I'll check the jet at some point too (its had a hard life).
Hi Rob ! Good tip on being able to just got the wings off !! Didn't think to find another tank lid and do that. Awesome :D. I was very surprised to see a 41 !!
How do i know if i need to service the NRV ? and how would i do this ? (from what i can understand there is a special tool). I'll keep you all posted on my progress !! :D

Alerted by @kerophile, who knows I have a Primus 41.

Pri No.5 cap will fit. Identical component happens to be off my steel-tanked Pri No.405 but it’s a fit.

Fin grip cut off and a bit of knurling if you could get that done and the profile wouldn’t be too far off.

Or, how about this type of cap off a Pri 221 - but later Pri 100’s had something similar as I recall - confirmed, with a slotted head though.

With the keeper plug unscrewed and the threaded rim filed down you’d have some knurling and no ‘fin’ as on the Pri 5 cap. Might even be able to create the profile of the convex ‘dome’ with a bit more judicious filing. Knurling pattern’s different but hey.

Regarding the slotted cap from a later Primus 100 Kerophile’s provided this photo to illustrate what we mean and says,

Ah yes, the pics. I wondered if they would. I just copied and pasted a conversation, with my photos, I’d had privately with Kerophile when he contacted me.

Primus No.5 cap - cut the fin off, but problem then gripping the cap to screw/unscrew unless you can get it ‘knurled’.

    Cap off a Primus No.221 - a bit less rare than a Primus 41.

    Keeper cap removed, getting close.

Best/most available option, late model Primus 100 cap.

That late date '100' cap was the form common to the last No.1 & 5 Optimus and Primus stoves as well - so should be easy enough to source.

    @presscall @igh371

Thank you for the images and help ! Much appreciated. I think the primus #100 cap is the best option at the moment. I have had a look on basecamp and believe this is what i'm looking for ?

2041 Tank lid with packing for 100 stove £ 3.00 (I have also emailed them but i'm still waiting on a reply.)

From the exploded view of the Primus 100 (https://classiccampstoves.com/attachments/1400180531-page05-jpg.110927/) it implies i need the part 4261 ?

Does anyone know where i could source something in Australia ?

@Jazzman56 - 2041/4261 - I think 4261 is the old Primus part number - 2041 will be the most recent Optimus number which is what Basecamp use on their list (except in instances where there is no direct Optimus equivalent part no.).

    @Tony Press

I definitely need a tank cap (2041). I need to pull the stove down more and work out what else I need. The jet is banged up a bit and I can't see the cleaning needle coming through either. Will get back to you soon !

Going to boiling water the pump tomorrow and see if I can get it lose. Plus need to inspect the NRV also

Usually the easiest way is just to search for the component in the Basecamp Optimus parts list and with reference to their Optimus exploded parts diagrams. But do check first to see if what you are after appears even in that list under an original Primus catalogue number, that does happen sometimes as many parts are now obsolete and long out of production.

Success !! I managed to get the pump out with boiling water, thank you for the tip ! Much appreciated.
Should i look into replacing the NRV seals or how do i check if they are ok ?
I'll check the jet and cleaning needle when i get some more time. Should i pull the spindle and packing out also ?

You can use a match to poke the rubber. If it gives then rebounds it will probably be OK. If it’s hard it’s no good.

Unless the stove has been serviced in the last decade, I doubt the washers will be ok.

If the pump leather looks ok, soak it for a few hours in engine oil or better still neatsfoot oil.

    Cheers

    Tony
