No, I wouldn't say that he was into any of those either. I think it just was a relative that had an old hot-bulb engine. And his father managed to get hold of a small steam engine. That was all.
Yes Christer, how I miss my memory. Sarah is so disappointed delighted when I manage to get home from work in the evening. Had images of tractors for some reason, Sarah would not be happy with Fordson on the drive though, think I better stop there.
I think you need to exchange Sarah for someone with better knowledge about life's necessities. I mean... who can not be happy with a Fordson on the driveway!? Very strange... One of my tractors is a Fordson Dexta from -63, and it's a real work horse despite its age.

This stove thing is clearly more philosophical than one might imagine. That said, I photographed a catch on an old farm gate the other day which I’m pretty sure represented all that’s good in the world. Joyous bloody thing. Thanks for your views. I appreciate them. I’ve just bought another stove after a very nice bottle of red. Rush of enthusiasm. Possibly a donkey. Almost certain rookie error. Time will tell. D

I know what you mean i had a habit of going nuts bringing back the beauty of old Seva 123 stoves and realized after you use them all that was futile. Once polished it stays on the shelf, once touched it starts to revert back to being what you liked about it in the first place. A simple tool time tested and reliable.
@Dork , No worries, as most of us have done something to our stoves that we later regretted. That's how we all learn. And, unlike some here at CCS, I am one who do enjoy having a few stunningly lovely stoves, looking like brand new!! Of course, for most of the lovely stoves I have, I also have plenty of user stoves. So, once polished and gleaming, I'll use it no more, and just enjoy looking at it!! One magical thing about CCS, is that for almost all of us, "more stoves" always seem to find their way to us all!!! I, too, would like to see your stove, so please do post photos of it!! As an aside, I recall Magnus, back when he was here, and it was neat that he could always seem to find stoves, etc., that few of us had never seen before. Hi, I'm surely going to step on many sensitive toes here, but my stoves are tools. None of my tools came from the factory covered with gunge or patina, and I try to keep them cleaned up after use so they don't look old and done in before their time. Plus I find it more enjoyable to work with clean tools--it's something I was taught as a child and it stuck. As such, my brass stoves get a bit of polish now and and then. Not a mirror image kind of thing, they're just a bit shiny in the sunlight until that patina inevitably returns with use. If that hurts their economic value, so be it. I didn't buy them to make money! Rick C
sounds right to me, I have never seen a discussion here on how to "distress" your stoves to look older. Except for a few display stoves, most of the stoves talked about here are for use, and are kept in the best shape possible. Often minor upgrades are made to them. Ivan
I have to admit, the stove is one of the few bits of metal on the boat I try to keep shiny. That's not to say that my efforts are entirely effective --it's a salt-water environment, and by the end of the season everything has gone a bit green-and-pink mottled. But there's something about the stove, the chronometer, the barometer, the compass, and the cannon that seems to warrant a little bit of polish. The stoves on shore? For some reason I'm less fussy about them. They're all quite patinated. Alex
No flame shots, I'm afraid --not generally a good idea to be distracted with camera work while playing with firearms-- but this is the critter: Heavily modified 10ga Winchester-model made by Bellmore-Johnson that I inherited from my father. Basically I pulled the barrel assembly out of the stock carriage, because with the carriage it was too big to use aboard my sloop, and built the swivel-gun mount for it so that I could mount it in my sloop's oarlock socket. Anyway... (Sorry about the thread drift.) I like patina just fine --note the bronze bilge pump and bronze cowl vent (on the foredeck) in the above photos-- and with it the memories the patina reflects, but sometimes a shiny bit of brass is a really nice accent. Besides, it isn't as though it takes much work to make the shine go away. Alex
