Hello all JonnyADV here with my first post. I just purchased a aluminum suitcase 442 1963 model at an estate sale. I was doing some research learning more about this model stove and came across a picture on this site under stove identification were the stove have a propane fixture where the normal fuel tank would hook up. Is this something you can or used to be able to purchase? Also is there a way to convert this stove to propane. The fuel tank that came with it is completely screwed i will try to post pictures soon.

    Thanks for any help.

I don't mean to be rude or obnoxious, but I think it would be a shame to turn that 442 into a propane burner. What I bet you could do is find a replacement fuel tank and get that thing going on its true fuel - Coleman Liquid Fuel.

The propane valves are available at most big box stores, and at amazon and other online places for under $30 USD.

    Here's one at amazon:

The aluminium colemans are not common it would be a shame to modify it.
Im too far away to help but Im sure another closer member will offer to either swap your stove for one already converted or even better offer a deal on the parts to make yours go again on coleman fuel.

    Hey, JonnyADV,

Welcome to CCS! I agree with Sam's wisdom, and were I you, I'd be fixing up the fuel tank that came with your 442, and using it the way it was designed. Get a nice old 425 and use THAT one with a propane adapter, but don't cut yourself out of a ton of fun by using the 442 as it was originally meant to be used!!

We have several fine and knowledgeable CCS members in Texas, and I'm sure that one of them would help you with your fuel tank, if you are willing to make a little trip to visit them. What, exactly, is wrong with the fuel tank, and what are it's symptoms in not running? Let us know, and we can help you get it back to running as it should. Take care, and God Bless!

    Every Good Wish,
    Doc

Thanks for all the info the 442 fuel tank has had a bung welded into the top of it for god knows what as soon as I get home I'll post some pics also doesn't hold any pressure but I know that can be fixed. I think this tank is only going to be good for parts at this point I was just looking at options to use the stove once i get it cleaned up. The conversion isn't permanent is it? My understanding was that it was just used in the place of the normal fuel tank.

You are correct -- no modifications to the stove are necessary to install a propane generator.

I picked up an aluminum case suitcase a couple years ago that came with only a propane control and I've been looking for the correct tank ever since. So hang on to it and see if you can get it to work.

I think one of those propane adapters is a good thing to have on hand. There is zero modification to the stove and you could always obtain another tank later. It'd be worth it to see the old stove glowing once more!
