Svea 123 Disassembly

Random slight tapers exist all over the working end of this wrench! A Dremel, reading glasses and a magnifying glass were my machine shop. It’s a miracle these things work at all!

 

Re: my 123, flame bowl/cup

Having a wicked time trying to unscrew this flame bowl. I've tried getting some torque by putting a long screwdriver through the side vents, with no success.
I then sprayed a little liquid wrench inside so it could seep down into the threads and also at the burner tube junction and left over night. No success.
I then put the stove in the freezer hoping to contract the brass. No success.

I'm afraid I will wreck the cup out of shape if I try too hard with the screw driver.

Any other suggestions much appreciated. Thanks loads for this forum...!!

If it’s that stuck, do you need to take it off at all? I might loosen up with use or prolonged soaking in penetrating oil, followed by some heat to the bottom of the burner bell at the joint.

Patience and gentle persuasion is required if you really want it off.

Thanks, no, you're right. I really don't need to. Just running through a break down of it. My biggest concern was the leak from the spindle/control which you folks helped me out with.

 

You might find that after you use it a few times the threads will unlock.

Regarding the pentagonal tool for the SRV: I see Mr McMillan is no long registered, last seen 18 months ago.

Any source for a tool ? The bits sold on eBay look like an accident to happen.

 

Came back from a trip in the Desolation Wilderness in the Sierras with my Dad's Svea 123 and Sigg tourister set. Between smelling white gas on the trail and seeing the fire around the fuel cap I figured after 50 years it deserved some love. Got the pip and washer kit from Ross at the Fettlebox and ground my own tool out of an old hex key, but it began rounding off the penta PRV fitting. Trick to get the pip out was heating the cap - the old pip smoked a bit then with a 'tink' it was loose, and the threads opened with ease! Good for another 50 years.
