hi all, I picked up what I thought was a pretty nice 8R for a very good price. My intention is to make it a user. I try not to polish used stoves, especially a user as what is the point. This stove has minimal wear and paint loss on the case and the burner showed little use other then some spliiage down the tank that look like it was causing corrosion. I did not want to leave the corrosion in place so took it apart to clean it. Once I had the corrosion removed, I noticed a copper effect as if whatever spilled may have leached the copper from the brass. Here is a before and after photo. My question is does this especially weaken the tank? The thickness on these tanks seem very robust and I would think they are fairly strong. Opinions and advice? Thank you
I wouldn’t personally be afraid to use it. To get peace in mind - you could fill the tank, place it on a suitable surface and surroundings and then let it boil a couple of large pots of water in a row, while watching it from a distance. Should it break - no larger harm to you or others should be done. But again - I wouldn’t personally be concerned.
IMHO It'll be fine, people who polish their stoves take more metal off than that (from what I can see in your photo). Remember originally it wasn't just strong enough, there was a massive safety margin built in.
Thanks, I was thinking it is safe enough but value the opinions on this board. I will fire it up and take some flame shots this evening and post along with before and after photos. It cleaned up well. Not exceeding different then most 8R but perhaps some dating clues from those who study these. I wonder what acidic food was dripped on the tank and left. I would not think fuel would be corrosive.
Don't use any ammonia-based polish [Brasso. Duraglit] on stove brass, as the ammonia makes the brass brittle. Personaly, I only use ketchup. It's brass-safe and non toxic. Not the brightest form of polish, but gives it a clean patina.
I agree with the others but I will still look inside the tank for any weakness, gum etc, You are the one who work on, and at the same time, you may know if the fuel they were using in was the good one for the 8r. Enjoy
Its just what they do here's mine gets used every day and I've no issues with a bit of staining on the brass.
