Hi can anyone tell me where I can get Panel wipe ( the no toluene type ) in the North Yorskhire (Richmond) or Darlington areas of the UK. Was using Coleman fuel from Yeoman only 3.99gbp but they have put the price up.

Also if I am replacing the graphite packing on a 8R valve tap do I also need to replace the metal ring that is also on the spindle as I will need to order one of these too if this is the case.

    Many thanks
    Gary T

For PW try a trade motor factors outlet or auto paint supplier.

You don't need to replace the metal ring; the old one should be ok.

If you can get up as far as Bishop Auckland, I can recommend a supplier... :)

Anyone know of anywhere in the Cheshire area? Meths around here seems to burn with a very yellow flame (and yes its they are new bottles). When I told my US friends how much we pay for meths they just laughed!

Panel Wipe is used by people here as a substitute for Coleman fuel or petrol, not as a substitute for methylated spirits. There may be stoves about which can utilise either as fuel but there are also stoves in which the use of panel wipe would be dangerous.
Better to be cautious and regard panel wipe as petrol.

That said it can generally be obtained from trade motor factors and / or auto paint shop suppliers.

Alan, I daresay you could have probably used the price of any fuel (be it solid, liquid or gas) sold in the UK, as an example of just how much we are being ripped off here compared to our US counterparts. It makes my blood boil...

    Hey, David,

If you've got "boiling blood", why do you need a stove, at all??!! Just hold onto your cookpot and let your blood boil until your food's done, no need for any kind of fuel, at all!!!

(Sorry..... to quote me brother, Spudz, "I'll get me coat......"!)  ;) Take care, and God Bless!

    Every Good Wish,
    Doc Mark

We get ripped off as well here in the Colonies. 48 cents of every dollar charged for fuel is tax, or reguolatory expenses. That's every dollar, not every gallon.

I have a former friend who's a liberal democrat and always bellyaching about how "Big Oil" is robbing us blind. He's never explained to me exactly what government or government agency has paid a nickel to explore for oil, drilled a well for oil, built a refinery, tanker, oil rig, or gas station, or hired a single person to do any of those things, yet still sucks 48% off the top.

The Mafia could take lessons. 48% vig. In some countries that sort of criminal economic activity is a capital offense. Even in the bad ol' days of Mob rule in Vegas they only skimmed 20%.

As the man said: "Rope, Tree, Politician. Some assembly required."

I went today to get some Surgical spirit and a 500ml bottle (approx 1 pint) cost me the equiv of $6!!!
I was trying this in my alcohol stoves because the meths I can get locally has a lot of water in it so I thought I would try some.
I dont remember exactly how much duty(tax) we pay on gas(petrol) but I seem to remember that its above 80%
In fact I am finding that the alcohol stoves are the most expensive to run!
the Paraffin stove the cheapest and next the petrol.
