Pot Leg Height Formula?

    Hi all

I'm getting ready to fab up some pot legs for a variety of my stoves that are lacking. I've just "guestimated" the height on previous legs I've made and that's been fine.

But, I'm wondering if other fettlers are using a "formula" for fabrication? I'm thinking that someone(s) out there who is more precise than I has come up with something like "X" number of centimeters/millimeters/inches above the top of the silent cap/flame spreader. Basically, that's the "constant" that I'm looking for - distance above the cap/spreader that the top of the leg ends at. Hope that makes sense.

Any thoughts on this? Thanks in advance!

    Cheers,
    Gary

I'm not aware of any formula but it does make a difference - even to how much carbon monoxide is given off.

If there's any models you want info on I'm sure we can help. The ruler is at hand!

Thanks Henry!  (Thank you too, Ross. Our replies crossed.)

Funny you should say that, as I was just headed in from the shop having concluded that I was not going get an answer and would have to extrapolate my own.

In hand, I have the measurements from the very few stoves I own that I can be reasonably sure have the original legs and burners. (I sure wish I lived in the UK where complete stoves are so common that it's not an issue!)

So, for silent burning 2-pints, I get about 1/4" (6mm) from top of pot leg to top of burner cap.
    Based on: 1961 nickel-plated Bahco Primus 5R.

    I get the same 1/4" (6mm) for my 1936 Primus #4 silent.

So, I'll guess that silents will require about 1/4" (6mm) regardless of the size of the silent burner.

My 1952 Primus 1S:or roarer has 7/8" (22mm) from top of pot leg to top of burner. My Svea 16's measure about the same.

So, for 2-pint roarers I'm going with that and I'll conclude that I can probably apply that measurement to all flavors of discus type roarers as well.

When it comes to 1-pint and 1/2-pint roarers I'm going to have to guess at something a little less, maybe 5/8-3/4" (16-19mm). Sadly, I'm not convinced that I can rely on any of the stoves I own of that size having correctly sized legs; if they have them at all! (Most don't.)

So. My pot leg formulae are as follows:
    Silents-
    6mm + X + Y = Z

    Large roarers
    22mm + X + Y = Z

    Small roarers
    19mm + X + Y = Z (Perhaps with a small trim)

    where:
X = distance from top of leg socket to top of cap/burner
Y = depth of leg socket
Z = Overall length of pot leg

If folks find this useful, great! If you find it amusing or comical, well, that's great, too! I hope I broke up the monotony of your day.

    Cheers,
    Gary

Hi Gary, Heres' another data point for your database

Just measured my Hipolito 36 with regulated silent burner and it measures 11/16" from apex of outer cap to top of legs - If I read correctly that fascinating article from Ross M's link I think the extra height is nice - less CO production and more BTU's from reduced flame quenching ? Am I on the right track Ross M ? Also glad to see that 123 stoves are low CO producers ! Tom
