    Hi all,

I've posted once before needing some help with a M-1950. Since then I've been lurking. Especially of late when I decided I absolutely had to have a Coleman 530. I was successful at auction, and came away with a real honey of a B46. It has the origianl manual, but no diffuser plate. I've torn it down over the last couple of days to find out what I was in for. Everything semed to be in pretty good order with the exception of the hour I spent chiseling out the old cap gasket. I polished the stove and can while my students were testing today. I stopped by Napa to get a new gasket, and reassembled it when I got home. I was going to take the valve body out of the fount to clean it out when I decided that I just couldn't wait any longer. I figured the worst that will happen is that it wouldn't start, and I would have to clean it out later. Well, after some false starts, about ten kitchen matches, and a lot of spins of the needle handle, she lit off and stayed lit.

Ahhh, few things match the first cuppa from a new acquisition!

There are some issues: I swear I caught a whiff or two of methylated spirit while it was running. Very likely someone had a least tried to use stove alcohol in the past. Hopefully I don't have corrosion issues inside the fount from whatever moisture was absorbed by the alcohol.

The flame has a couple of inches of yellow trail, it's not straight blue. I forgot to clean the generator when I had it apart. How handy that it uses the same generator as the M-1950.

I need to replace the O-ring I got (gratis) from Napa, with something like buna or viton. I have no idea what the material is. They said it was for automotive AC, and it is blue in color. They had nothing else in stock. It didn't fail during today's one hour burn, so I guess I'm alright for now.

The lower can has some significant surface corrosion on the inside. I'm not looking forward to getting my fat meathooks in there with some steel wool.

All in all, not too bad. I'm very happy with it. I didn't consider myself a collector of stoves, but a quick mental survey produced a 530, an M-1950, a Swedish army kit ("Ostlund", how could I not?), a couple of Coleman two-burners, and a boatload of MSR XGKs and Whisperlights that I have acquired over the years on the job.

One question I have was whether the filler cap on the 530 is supposed to be chained. Can anyone clue me in?

I've recently gotten into lanterns, as well. Two BriteLyte 150cps, two milspecs, and an Optimus 200P. If I get some time this weekend, I'll light everything that I have here (a lot of my stuff is at home in Kodiak, AK), and get some pictures. I think it's going to get loud...

Cheers all, and thanks for the help I've already received here.

The cap does not have a chain on the 530.

Do not run that stove with that " O" ring.

I make viton gaskets for that. Email me and I will get some replacements.

The yellow flame is due to build up in the generator.

The filler-funnel on the 530 has the chain otherwise it would be easily lost.

Kelly- I'll be in touch shortly. Thank you.

Mike- Looking forward to getting back for good this summer. When were you there?

Trevor- Sure, it makes perfect sense. I ask because my milspec lanterns have both the funnel and cap chained.

Dave O: The reason the 530 does not have a chain is because it is not "mil spec". See 530 blog in the "reference gallery". The yellow flame may also be caused by old or bad fuel, clean tank well and run Coleman fuel for best results. Mike...
