Matukat, yes, there is alot of good fishing up here. (heck right at the end of my street is a cove) but for some reason no one has any stoves. I guess seeing how this state is so flat, no one hikes and no one goes camping? ( WHY, would you not want to get out and go camping? it makes no sense to me...)
once in a great while, there is a Coleman propane stove (GOD FORBID!!) for sale, but never any gas lanterns or gas stoves. I really dont get it. oh well, maybe this spring and summer will be better than the last few??

    Or-
    "How green is my Coleman?"

I wasn't going to do it, then someone mentioned rust, then, I had the choice of what to do on another exciting evening. Hmmm... run rampant in the streets? Try to relive my lost youth? Go on a crime spree? Refinish a stove?....
    The stove won.

The tank is a modern tank that was an orphan from the chemical recycling place. (drop and swap type program) I tested it for about 5 minutes, then shut it down and checked for flooding. No flooding. :D
This cheap camera does not show the detail as well as I would like, there is a small glitch in the paint by the latch. Touched up with a mismatched paint. Ran out of the "Zynolyte Forest Green 0469" (which seems to be a very close color to some of the greens Coleman used. I decided to leave my can of "John Deere, case green" for a different stove)
"Rust Eater" cleaned the stove and the bit of rust on the latch off nicely.
All in all, I am pretty happy with how it came out. There is a little border around the decal where I protected it by taping down a piece of plastic. I will repaint the tank and check out it's generator later. Right now I have the pump leather soaking in Neatsfoot oil. Turns out that is the "Coleman recommended" oil for pump leathers.
Once again, I've avoided taking up a life of crime...
    Best,
    Randy

Edit- After looking at the pics, I think the "John Deere/case green" paint might have been a better match to the original. Still happy with it, looks a heck of a lot better and works! 1235255853-Photo0021.jpg

$1.50 you say!!! " I've avoided taking up a life of crime..." It seems to me that at $1.50 that may be a steal.LOL .I got a 425e a couple of weeks ago and hope it turns out as good as yours.

Thank you very much Gentle fettlers!
The color looks good, but really is closest to a Canadian Coleman color to my eye. I think the newer U.S. ones are darker and the older ones are lighter.... If I find something close to that one, I'll try to detail the decal better.
    Who's got Coleman green suggestions?

    That's why I took the last pic, so you could see, or I hope see, that it's the same decal on the same stove!
    Thanks David!
edit! That's really the best of compliments. If I had figured out how to save the decal without a tape border or endangering the decal, you really wouldn't be able to tell without a better camera or looking at it in person. Wife outlined the decal with different paint after I sprayed it, to smooth out the old finish showing. I think I am going to puncture the empty can to get touch up paint to give it finishing touches.
    :)

Edit... again! The prep was just the "Rust Eater" (brand name), and a rub down with steel wool, maybe double zero gauge steel wool, and a rinse in between both. I hope it sticks as well as it looks.

Really nice job. An inspiration to deal with some rusty, well used Colemans in the garage....

Yes, very well done indeed Matukat! I'm glad you were able to save the lable. The 2 I have just have Coleman lable without the instructions. Also, I just looked at the can of paint I use and it is Rustoleum "Hunter green" if that helps.

Just curious what paint other's are using and what results they get. I have a can of "Moss Green/John Deere/Case Green that used to be made by Krylon. I have seen that you can get a "John Deere" green from Rustoleum now. It looked to me that the test patch I did with the krylon might have been a better match, but I'm happy enough with how it looks. Trouble is, these cans of paint are from the chemical recycling place. The krylon still has it's dated price sticker from "Micheals" It was sold in November of 1992 and of course I only have ONE can. It's probably enough for a 425, if the 425 isn't as bad as this one was. :-) Same with the Zynolyte "forest green" used the whole can, now I need to puncture it just to get a little touch up paint.

Let's see some pics of your hunter green stove Rick!

Nice Job! More incentive for me and my son when the 2 you helped me get come in. Does she also get lanterns in? She told me she saw lots of stoves. THX, Pat

Hey Randy, I will have to get it from my daughter. She likes to camp and so I rebuilt it for her. As soon as I do I will post some pics. In the mean time I took some of my 425B. Used the same paint. I didnt do the inside of top with the lable (or sides/flaps) as I didnt want to ruin it (the lable) and it was in good shape. I just cleaned it up some and put a little wax on it. Oh I did paint the tank as well, that I used Krylon Banner red. The first pic is without flash, the 2nd is with.

Looks to be a fair match! Good looking stove Rick! One thing I discovered is that even within one companies product line, "Hunter Green" (and probably every other color) can be different or a different version with the same name, but different details on the can.
I can just barely see a slight shade of difference in the flash pic and if you hadn't told me the inside was unpainted, I wouldn't have noticed it!
Very good colors and thanks for the tip on the tank color. I tried to get the old tank to pressure up, and it wouldn't, even after soaking the pump leather over night, not sure where the problem is, but for function, I may just leave the newer tank with the stove. Kind of lets me off the hook to redo the tank and fettle it though....LOL
Hi Pat- The only lanterns she has had that I've seen were two gassies with cases, not my cup of tea, although I probably ought to have one just for the sake of having the option. I think she sold them. One will come my way, I'm sure.

Thanks Randy, of course now I try to take before and after pics. I take what ever I am going to paint into my local ace and try to match. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt.
If your losing pressure maybe its just the tank cap seal, did you try another cap, could be the nrv in the pump or maybe there is a hole in the tank....I got a 502 and had to replace both the cap and the nrv.

I've used Rustoleum Hunter Green on some and some sort of Krylon on others, there's been enough variation from Coleman that you can't really go wrong. For the labels I've had good luck with just using masking tape and carefully razoring along the raised line of the decal, don't cut all the way through if I can, just enought that the tape peels away in a straight line.

There's a 425 still sitting in my garage waiting for....... PAINT! :-)

Thank You very much! I was shocked when i saw those 2 sitting on the side of the road! I am having a blast restoring the 242C but the 220E is putting up a bit of a struggle. I cant seem to get the air tube to unscrew and without that gone, i cant get anything off the lantern. It is in the shed right now letting the PB Blast and WD 40 soak in for a few days. The glass cleaned up rather nice though :D

Hummmm, a bit of response here if you don't mind. well even if you do i'm gonna do it anyway.

Three (3) piece caps are as safe as the person using them. Even the single piece caps are dangerous in the hands of a neotype stovie.

There are stoves to be had in every part of the country if one is out and about and looking. Who would have ever thought i'd find a Model 51 Primus in the middle of Illionis? Okay i did and not one but two. Okay one was found in Wyoming but so it was far from it's homeland.

The "black" look of an electro cleanned stove will shine up right nice once you have rubbed the black off with a bit of scotch brite pad. And you don't have to scrub hard either.

JD green is very near the original colour of Coleman green. I've used it for several stoves and no one was able to tell the difference unless i put them side by side.

I like the 3 piece caps. Never had a problem. I guess I could create a problem with them, but never had the need. Mike...
