I use those empty little bottles.
I don't know why, but I always have red hot flamespreaders ... :-k

    Hello Sefa,

These bottles are from a time when, in certain areas daily cooking was still done on pressure stoves, and houses were (partly) lit by pressure lamps.
So these cans were used several times a day, and on one location.
No real need to close them off, as evaporation was negligable in relation to what volume of primer was actually used.

My mother was born and raised on a ship, where such appliances were very much part of daily life.
Filling up these appliances, with their spirit cans, was a daily chore.

    Regards,
    Mike

The one Ian mentioned is only 2.50 USD from Coleman. Not a bad deal at all.

I bought one of those packafeather caps with the nice spout tubes that Nick recommended, but I can't find any PET bottles with compatible threads. I don't suppose that anyone can recommend a brand that has smallish sized bottles with compatible threads? I found one 1000ml bottle, but that's a bit large just for priming when backpacking.

Hi all: This is what I use. Well made, doesn't drip or leak and spirits don't evaporate. Looks more at home with classic stove that plastic. Mike...

Hey HJ, have you tried REI? They have a lot of different sized PET bottles there.

    Interesting discussion.

Don't forget, however, that the beautiful metal bottles with the swan necks deliver a measured dose.
This is because the metal tube extends down into the bottle and so delivers a tube-full of meths only.
This is very handy when working in dark conditions or when trying to deliver meths to a hard-to-access spirit cup.
The swan neck is a 'must' for lanterns such as those made by Optimus, etc.

Hi, Ron, good thought. I did buy one of the REI flip top ones, but it's threads aren't compatible with the packafeather and the packafeather's tube can't be inserted into the REI flip top.

Packafeather recommends water bottles; I'm just trying to find one with compatible threads.

Very practical ... now if I could just find some. They're certainly very appealing.

Sewing Machine Oiler- bought on Eby 3 for $10 with shipping. They work fine as is for bench work. If you want no-leak for carrying, add an O-ring under cap and remove the screw cap and add a 1/8 vacumn cap.
    Holds 120 ML.

the new ones are made of plastic. That has a certain appeal but i'd prefer one made of copper or brass not steel or plastic.

Hummmmph another "project" for the midnight fettler??

Hi all: The classic tins are very nice for a display. Is there a stopper for the necks to keep them from spilling in transport so they can be of practical use? Mike...

No, there is no stopper for the swan-necked bottles. There is also a hole in the top of the tin to allow air in so that a vacuum is not formed when pouring.

When you have finished using the bottle for a session of priming, the bottle needs to be emptied if it is to be transported.

Thus, yet another bit of kit to carry along. Yes i see a good reason for the midnight fettler to look into this.

True in principle, but in reality it's slightly more complex.
It gives a much larger dose than that which would have been standing in the tube itself.
The bottle actually consists of two compartments; one main- and another much smaller at the bottom for the correct priming amount.
The separation between them has small holes which let the meths in to the smaller "portioning compartment".
The filler tube is going through that divider plate at the opposite side of the holes, and thus only able to give out the amount of meths held in that lower compartment when tilting it in the preheater cup of the lamp or stove.
Obviously the smaller compartment will be re-filled as soon as the bottle is back to upright position again.
An effective, simple and reliable construction, but unfortunately also very prone to rust because of the thin sheet metals used. :(

And just as Mike M points out, these bottles primarily was meant for the households and not for camping, but at home they are invaluable!
