Definitely a nice stove, but you're right. They are heavy, and they're bulky. For serious BP'ing, I'd probably bring something else, but if you're doing something lighter with kids, scouts, friends that aren't serious BP'ers, then this is a great stove. Very stable, easy to use, not much in the way of dangerous (for kids and such) priming. You need this stove. Don't look at them as a burner short, look at them as your extra burner. When your 2 burner is tied up with cooking and you really need that hot coffee, the 502 is the perfect stove. You need this stove. There. You've said it yourself. You need this stove. How am I doing so far? Brilliant. "5/02" (5/02/10) is on my calendar.
I have to admit that I'm not a member of the 502 club I have a 533 and a 440 both of which are superb bits of kit and I used to have a 424 which was never anything better than useless which I slung out about a year ago before discovering this site. I am presently drooling over one of the new generation of Colemans the Gemini double burner that is sadly only available on your side of the Atlantic you can see the beastie on Amazon .com it is priced at 140 USD and looks like a glorious boys toy....
neither am i and i'm not to worried about it but i'd really like to join the 500 speed/heat master? club preferably the one with the spiderweb style potstand
What are the photo-shoot rules? Must the photos be shot on the the set date, and posted timely thereater? Shot and posted same day? Or can pre-shot pics just be posted on said date? Or (my preference), no hard rules?
I am set for the photo shoot you all - got about 8 or so to post so let's do it - photo shoot that is Tom
Parra: I am with you,I am a true fan of the 500 Speedmaster and the spider web grill. The 502 is a great stove but I like the wider stance, bigger grate and extra weight for those large pots and pans. I kinda like the looks of the nickel tank and spider web grill over the look of the 502. I guess I like the "older" style. Both stoves are about the same in flame and function. To me the 502 is just a smaller version of the 500 without the sexy looks. Mike... Tom: You only have "8" 502's??
Hi Men, Since we seem to have differing opinions about the merits of the 500 and 502 series stoves, why not photograph both. I propose we include 500, 502 and the failed 501 stoves. This will alow for greater participation, not to mention some controversy....Do you really think the Speedmaster is SEXIER? Cheers, Manny
hi Flivver and Trainmanny i thought not having the 502 meant i was safe but if the photoshoot includes the 500 i better get my best bargain hunting head on i really don't know much about the Coleman stuff but since i saw the one Gary fettled i have had a secret hankering for one, i used to have a G.I pocket but sold it at the time (before ccs) it didn't worry me but every time i see one of those i think what an idiot i'll do my best to be able to join in the shoot as sounds like a great idea edit do i think the 500 is sexier than the 502 it's like comparing Nora Batty and Ursula Andress
That was Ursula back then! not as maiden as she used to be. She does suffer from a bone sickness though
We all get older and wiser, or so one would hope. It's easy to see Ursla has. Still i'd not make her sleep on the couch in the living room.; lacne. Dang she still makes me lose my mind. lp
i will fess up....i dont have a 502... but at least i have a 508 but i would really LOVE to own a 502, but in this neck of the woods, they really are not that easy to find
I have 2. the first one came with the case/tin, pot handle $5.00. The 2nd I bought for $8.00 and then at an antique store found a case for it along with the pot handle..$2.50us.
Someone on CCS said they're like a 1930's gas works - pipes, wheels, chrome, brass, paint In use, it's hot everywhere above the paint, apart from the control valve knob and the red plastic pricker control lever handle ... ... which makes it a close call not to get a scorch when turning the control The brass generator tube goes through colour changes, from a coppery metallic when hot ... ... through a purple irridescence when throttling down ... ... to a plain grey when the flame's out Oh yeah, great stove! John
Yes sir that's a proper running 502. hummmph time to operate one of mine. Haven't done that for a time. lance
I have found that the 502 is a great stove for those who are somewhat apprehensive about stoves. A buddy of mine on a recent camping trip had never used a white gas stove and was not too enthusiastic about learning the drill. However, by the end of the trip he was quite attached to the 502. Steve
