reading about the fun one can have brazing and soldering, i was inspired to create a handier, smaller stove outfit for java breaks while bicycling on the trails down here... i really like my 123R, especially with its BD11 minicap, so i crafted up a 'poor man's picnic' version of pot/pan/kettle support... this way, i can break down my 123R and pack it to fit in the small bag on my bike's seatpost: parts are simple: 1. a couple legs of grating scavenged from a Sterno folder, then ends filed square 2. three 2" pieces of K&S square tubing (US$0.90 a foot) 3. and one 12" piece of 1" K&S flat bar (US$0.99 and thin - can't remember the thickness, sorry) i stuck a piece of solid copper in the tubing, then bent for a tiny leg and cut to fit; the 12" flat bar wraps perfectly around the 123's base with about 1/2" overlap thanks to the advice here and tips on reading material, i was able to quickly do the common soldering using a small butane torch: here's the setup in action (i'll use a lightweight windscreen made from an oven liner pan when in the great outdoors): total cost was ~$5 (counting the cost of the scavenged Sterno stove) hope this helps someone!
hi LA nice one mate hope you don't mind me posting these pics but i need to say thanks to Gerry (Nordicthug), i don't have the skill yet to make anything like these but for a pot or two of Marmite i got some just like it they got here yesterday and the svea123r arrived today cost me $12.99 well cheap compared to the prices over here, i fitted a bell and plate from another 123r and she fired right up didn't take pics of her running on the first fire up but as sweet as a nut 123r and army No7 123r Army No7 do you like the captive tank cap? i'm going to get some alloy rod and make up some lightweight potstands and i'll be happy as a pig in sh*t thanks Gerry and sorry LA for posting in your thread but they are such a good idea atb Bill
very nice! i was hoping to do more substantial supports, but don't have access to the spares and yes, i like the captive cap - what stove is it from? (i've modified my Coleman exponent stoves/lantern to use captive caps - don't like rubber lanyards)
i'm not sure, but i saw the cap come up on ebay and i recognised it straight away as being the same as some of the ones fitted to the Swedish military 111's that i have seen online, btw none of the 3 SM 111's i have have this type of cap they have a groove around the base of the stem that the chain loop fits but i was the only bidder and thought it would be ideal on a stove that's going to be used outside a lot when i met John Leah at Porlock i'm sure he said he had bought one as well it's just a brass washer that is clamped down between the srv cap and the tank cap i was a bit dubious at first but it's fine and has been used loads with out ever blowing maybe the inner spring is a bit longer to maintain the same pressure release but i doubt it, i don't think the srv is super critical most of the ones i have serviced have been stuck solid
What? what? what? (as John wakes up in a hurry when he hears his name ) Oh yes - I got one of those as an extra with, I think, an 8R, I bought. Even then I saw that it was unusual so asked Bill what it was. He knew Cheers, John
any good model shop - ask for the K&S display stand (there will be brass tubing, rod, and flat bar, along with bigger sheets of brass)
