Outstanding!!! I love the chrome!!! These old 500's remind me of old snap on tools. Even though they're old they still shine better than anything new. Are you going to paint the burning or base rest? Cheers, Jeff
Jeff, Thanks I agree with you on the chrome. I have seen a couple tht look like they are permanently oxidized or dull and cant be shined. I bet you have seen some of these in Canada? I am considering doing it. It looks like the original base rest was a matte nickel color, if I can find it and make sure I clean all the corrosion (there isn't much, I think I will.
Hi All, John , nice job, excellent stove. If I can offer my 2 cents on re-painting the grate and shield - I would leave it as is on yours, looks fine and if this is a user then a new paint job not necessary. Also , to me they don't look "right" with a new fresh paint job on the grate, etc while the rest of the stove has a "patina" of use.Keep the original grate paint, etc, for character, It looks fine . Big BTU: Very nice example, a whole lot straighter than mine. I agree with Tom on paint. I would give the plate and grate a good cleaning and leave them that way. I like a stove that looks old but gives the impression that it has been very well cared for. A repainted stove to me loses it's history and becomes just another shiny stove. I do repaint only if an item is so far gone it becomes necessary to preserve it, then I will do a full restoration. Now one has a brand "new" stove that is old only in manufacture date. Jeff, we have rust here so bad that you have to watch the plastic! Just kidding but seriously it's a HUGE! issue. I have seen brand new steel items with rust on them within a week and things completely rusted through within 3 months. It eats through aluminium too. It's why I polish and wax so much. Like my 500 has a layer of wax on the bottom of the tank. Really beautiful example there Steveo. Jan, good to have you join hope to see all of your stoves soon!
You would have the same sulphur related corrosion problems as most volcanic areas. In NZ everyone knows not to buy cars etc from Rotorua for this same reason
Alan, I think for ours its probably more salt related. I am a mile off the ocean, the volcano on Oahu has been dead for a long long time and the active volcano area is the Big Isle. Look up Kailua Beach Hawaii sometime. Thats my beach!
from the first google hit Cautions: Monitor ocean conditions closely for occasional high surf. Watch out for the Portugese Man-of-War (jellyfish) and stinging limu (seaweed) especially from June through September. Obey all posting and warnings. never ran into stinging seaweed before

Just got out my old 500 and discovered it was an A40 as well. As much as I hate to, I'm putting it up on the 'Bay. Dang economy... I'll miss this stove.
