Hi George (and David, too!) I've taken quite a few pictures just now trying to get some that illustrate what I'm seeing. As a new owner of a #12, I'm certainly not as familiar with the stove as yourselves. That said, my four legs do not touch the bottom of the burner basket. They "float" above it by a couple of millimeters. The positioning lugs hold it in place, but no matter how I bend the four holding lugs downward, I cannot get the feet of the legs to touch down. These are the best pictures I could get. Sorry they aren't better. I believe that were I to cut off the positioning legs, that the plate would still perform exactly the same as it is the perforation lugs that are actually supporting the plate. At least on my version of the stove. It would be interesting to discover if other owners of this stove, like yourself, could verify the status of the legs (floating or not). Best, Gary
Hello guys, I just checked mine it is like yours (floating) The tabs prevent the 4 legs from sitting/touching. Stoves sure are interesting. Jeff
the bloke that designed this burner must still be about. maybe someone could contact him and get the story behind the design unless he's some top secret civil servant type

i have heard that some of the no12 stoves in circulation have left the services through official channels i know mine didn't - it fell off the back of a big brown lorry just over the bridge in newport
It might also be that the only way to solve this would be to either make a perforateted burner for a different stove ie 8r etc or a conventional plate for this stove. I dont have the tools or skill for this
A question I'd put is whether you'd pressurised the tank to dizzy atmospheres? When I've absent-mindedly pumped a brassie silent burner (No.5 pattern, say) too much the flame projects way out from the burner dome holes, almost to the point of flame-out. The shallow surrounding 'cup' does nothing to trap the pressurised flammable gasses. On the No.12 that cap is deeper and makes combustion possible. Yeah, point well made Gary, I guess I just did! Hi John Sorry to be so mysterious. I'm moving rather slow at the moment. This is basically a midicap with a extra large spigot tube (the one up the center) and larger than usual holes in the outer cap. Just leftovers from an idea that didn't pan out. No flame plate used - just set the cap on the vapo chamber. I'd imagine that it's pressurized higher than I might take a tank that was soldered. There's lots of security in a welded stainless steel tank I would think. I'll try to remember to count strokes next time I work with this one. When the burner fires into "hyperdrive", it appears to me that the rim of the burner cup acts as a flameplate. Sorta. There's lots of heat there and I'm just wondering if this might be a develop-able concept. I'm going to take some more photos tonight hopefully with a kettle on. I just thought it was interesting. Hi, first I have to say that Gary was right about the support method for the burner plate on the No.12 burner. The mini-feet support the flame plate, and the longer feet lock into the lugs on the base of the burner bowl, as he proposed. I have just checked my stove and then tried a plain flame-plate. Here are some photos, as the power is progressively increased: ] Here, for comparison, are similar photos with the original perforated flame-plate fitted. You will see how it is much more efficient, producing lovely controlled flame pattern. The original, sophisticated, flame plate is a clever design and is capable of taming this very powerful stove. The plain flame-plate I tried, was overwhelmed at higher power, and gave a flaring, fuel-rich, yellow flame. I found that if I raised the plain flame plate by 0.5 to 1 inch, a blue flame was possible. I believe the swirl pattern induced by the mini-feet of the original plate, results in efficient fuel/air mixing and produces the beautiful blue flamelets you can see in the burner bowl. do the feet conduct heat to the chamber? to cool the flame plate/improve vapourisation was this burner intended to be a silent but proved to be untamable? will it run on mineral oil???
