Thought this may be of interest. It is the washer end of a F W Linquist pump from a blowtorch. I have never seen one like this in my short time in stoves. It has what I describe as a flower-petal crimping washer behind the leather pump washer, that allows the leather washer to be clamped so that it fits the tube. This is a cracking idea as it helps new washers into the tube without tyre levering. matbe you have seen it before, but I thought it was worth sharing. Steve.

How does the leather washer swell to fill the tube diameter?

I think there is a wrong mounting. The leather should be between the nut and the clip.

To me, the clip (or whatever it is called) pushes sides of the leather to swell and keep it always touch inside of the pump tube.

The above pictured mounting style only destroys the wall of the pump tube.

    Am I thinking right?

I'm no expert, but to me this looks like something made afterwards by a home tinkler with a 'special idea'.
It's crudely made, and I don't really see any actual purpose for it.

Just as Trevor says, it probably counteracts the normal function of a pump leather against its tube.

i cant se how it can work as trevor points out how does it swell inside the pump tube to be effective and as sefa says it will damage the pump tube it must have been added by the previous owner at some time for some reason what i dont know

The leather looks very worn, prehaps it was a fair bit longer when new (it's hard to tell) so it had enough free length to work as it should?

I am just in the basic learning stages....but, that doesn't look right to me. Was it working well before you took it out?

Hi Sefa, I think you are right. Wrong assembly!

No it wasn't working and you guys have convinced me that it should not be like it is. I will try assembling it differently and see if it works better then. Steve.

I would first try to install a new leather cup in the pump in the "conventional" way, without this extra gizmo. It should work OK, like a million other pumps.

Yep, you were all correct. I re-assembled the pump with the petal-leaf washer inside the leather and it works OK. I can only assume that the petal-leaf device is meant to spread a very thin leather to keep it in contact with the tube wall. Anyway, it does not seem to do anything particularly special, and I have tried one of my own homemade washers with and without the device and it makes a gnats knacker's difference, probably on the negative side. thanks for your inputs. Steve.

As you stated, a fettlers way of make what he had, work as intended.
Thinner leather would "collapse" under compression and might need some support. A solution for a local probelm.
    Interesting :-)
