I went out and about today and picked up this big fellah . . . . The date code is X which makes it 1933, and I would guess that the tank will take about 8 pints, it is a good deal larger than my no 2. Here it is by a 210, also from 1933 for scale : What about the pan ring I hear you cry ! Well it has a very nice one thanks It is mighty big, 13 inches ( 34 centimetres ) across : Some of the soldering has been done with a shovel, and will need tidying up : As I say I haven't ever seen one before, so if any one else has one I would appreciate seeing yours, after all I have shown you mine
Shovel laid solder aside, the lettering on the side of the tank still looks remarkably clear for a stove of it's vintage. Very nice big 'un you have there Keith, and silent too.

Hi Keith Drool, drool, drool!!! I haven't seen a Primus No.8 before either. I love that very large cast-iron pan ring! I believe it has the same silent burner as the Primus No.6, which is a four and a half pint stove. The No.8 is obviously much bigger. Maybe it has the same size tank as the No.3 which holds 7 pints. When you get it lit, post the action photos.
A quick bit of measuring and calculating indicates the tank is going to hold about 7 pints, so indeed it is related to the No. 3.
Hi Keith, I like your new acquisition. I think my stove (Primus 7) is the elder brother of your model. It seems that the Primus 7 changed to the Primus 8 some considerable time before WW2 in view of the date of your stove. Do you have the large silent burner? It is difficult to get an impression of scale from these 7 pint stoves. Best Regards, George.
Hi Trevor and George I will have to check the burner size in the morning. It is true that with such a huge tank the burners can look somewhat small, when in fact they aren't ! The 1938 catalogue reference in my first post shows the No 8, but no number 7, so if one became the other then that change must pre date 1938 and presumably 1933 as well. The only other owner of a No 3 that I know of is Nick Kearney . . . he'll probably be along soon ! Regards
I can dig deeper for dates if any is interested but the 7 & 8 did exist side by side at one stage. The number 7 had a bigger burner. Both were quoted with the same boil time though.

( sounds of footsteps returning ) . . .right, I've measured the width of the burner and . . . oh cobblers just read the No 7 thread, should have measured the outer cap . . . . . . . . . .( sounds of footsteps returning - again ) . . . . right the burner cap is 46 mm maximum, does that make it a 4142, and thus correct for the 8 ?
According to an earlier post of kerophile's the 4142 is 49mm across the top of the outer cap, so I'm not sure what burner it has fitted, although it is bigger than that fitted to a no 5.
Wow! One really does not get an impression of its size -- until one looks at the photo where it is juxtaposed with the 210. Quite a difference. A beautiful stove, and what a great pot (pan) ring.

OK Keith I will show you mine . Picked this up yesterday and when looking at it could see no marking on top of tank, but could see Primus mark on side and Y22 on bottom (1934)light polish on top of tank and found very worn Primus name and number which I think has been No 8. As a lot of you will know not a true stove collector but always willing to forward any information to you I can to try and help with research. Steve
