This little half-pint is an eBay find:

It was pretty straightforward to get it into action. It needed a new pump leather as the old rubber one had perished completely. The NRV was stuck closed and had to be removed and unstuck. The jet needed to be cleared with a pricker and it was ready to run.

It made a brew and fried a couple of sausages and received a good brasso polishing as its reward.

It needs a good priming before you should attempt to light it. I tried a prime that would have been perfectly adequate on my Radius 21 U-U burner and instead got a big yellow flare-up as liquid paraffin emerged. I released the pressure and re-primed for longer and it lit up perfectly. I'm guessing there is more thermal mass in a lipstick burner and it needs more heat to get to the proper temperature.

Its one vice is that if you pump too hard there is a 'pffut' and the pressure under the pump escapes past the leather cup. This may not have occurred with the original rubber part. Gentle pumping stokes are needed.

I'm delighted with it, I think its a super little thing 8)

The burnerplate is either upside down or mounted very high, or am i just affected by the fumes from my still?

I have found (on my 96) that if i close the bleedscrew before priming, a slight pressure will build up in the tank and a small blue flame will be left when priming is burnt out. From there 1-2 pump strokes is plenty, to make the stove burn perfect.

The burner plate is not removable. The ends of the mounting tabs are bent over the edges of the burner bell and fix it in place.

Nicely complete and original set! The windshield shows it is not only the germans that 'overly constructed' things! I doubt anybody would use this 'sliding door' feature, but nifty ánd a topic!

    Hi David

I don't think that lipstick burner would have a higher thermal mass - does your lipstick burner have an inner stuffing of rolled up brass mesh? I'm wondering if your burner doesn't have the stuffing, so cools down too quickly. A brass stuffing (like the Primus 96 has) would increase the thermal mass to ensure that the burner head doesn't cool down too quickly and retains sufficient heat to vapourise your paraffin.

    Cheers

My lipstick is well stuffed with brass gauze. I have had it out for inspection and only the tip showed any blackening. I bet vaporization happens pretty close to the jet in normal use, where the heat is conducted in from the burner bell.

I just fired it up nicely with one good priming and the windshield in place to keep the heat around the burner bell. If that doesnt get hot enough then it will have the opposite effect and suck heat out of the tip of the vaporizer.
