found a nice little package from our favorite stovie in the Northwest: amazing that Mr. G is able to so accurately drill by hand - that's talent and dedication: the Hiker Plus roarer plate conveniently folds out of the way, so i inserted the tube w/the notches down (the cap would not function any other way, as it turned out): the tabs and cap fits perfectly in the bell (matching the Nova Plus, *not* the plain Nova head, btw):
a quick prime prior to a burn on kerosene: then a quiet flame: alas, the stove pressure easily overpowers the cap - if i turn up the flame, an 8-inch diameter yellow fireball results; however, for my purposes (a quiet simmer) the cap works fine... i'm going to test the stove w/naptha (Coleman fuel) to see if the cap will perform any better... but for now this works for me!
Neato!!! That is some powerful stove! Reminds me of when I put my BD midi cap on the British N0. 12 stove. I must admit the Kawasaki green of the Hiker+ has grown on me. Thanks for sharing! Cheers Jeff
It looks as though you can still get a very good flame even though you can't turn it up all the way. Clever adaptation, that little insert. Nice photo by the way. It's so clear that I can read Gary's warnings of doom and gloom. I rather prefer brass, but each to his own. HJ
UPDATE: thanks to tips from Mr. G, this idiot stovie now knows how to properly use his wonderful new Dawg-a-Nova on a Hiker Plus, and boy howdy, is he a happy camper: the restrictor tube is for use when running the stove on naptha! and indeed, according to Mr. G, following a hot prime and bringing up the pressure slowly, a very beautiful hot, totally blue and very, very silent flame results when running kerosene! w00t! it's like an absolutely different stove now!
Wow, thanks guys. I am not crazy about roarer burners on large stoves (don't mind so much on Svea 123 or Optimus 8R); for instance I prefer the 111T to the 111B. And this has put me off the Hiker Plus even more than the green tank. With this Dawg-a-Nova, the Hiker Plus becomes thinkable. Maybe even attractive. Dang, Berniedawg, you have done the stove world a huge favor.
Gary, Do any of your BernieDawg inventions get rid of that ugly green color? Seriously, it's great to see that stove working so well. HJ
Hi guys On lunch break. Thanks for the complements. There's another five of these caps in the mail to their new owners and some more I'm just finishing up to go out soon. Glad to see an improvement on that burn, L_A. I think the Dawg-A-Novas work best on white gas. It's hard to build a cap that will get enough heat funneled back to the burner base/vapo chamber on this stove for kero. The restrictor tube for white gas addresses the one-size-jet issue with the Novas. Jim, I have to confess the green no longer bothers me. I've sorta grown used to it as it's the color of the spouses new boat, so I see it a *lot*!. If it weren't for the green plastic thingy on the spindle control, a feller could just repaint the rest I'm thinking. Best, Gary
- but you did it for this stove, Master Fettler! - after i got the nice burn on kero, i cranked it up and the flame just got bigger, but maintained color; i took it up as far as i dared - simply astounding to be able to use this noisy roarer in peace and quiet (i make my coffee on the lanai anywhere from 0400 to 0600, and even my 228D 1950 Coleman lantern sometimes sounds too loud) - nice green kayak, btw!
Uh. No, Baja. Just fishing. How odd that you would think it a common practice to snap pictures of each other relieving onesself! (When I see you at CASG4, I'll have to make a point to watch for a camera in your hands when I head for the outhouse!) Best, Gary
This bad boy did go back. The fishermen on the trip were using small spoons, clipping two hooks off the treble and crimping the barb down. A few were kept one night and treated Cajun style by a kid who was also a chef in "real" life. They were great. We had a few for two different breakfasts, too. I haven't fished in years. G
That looks excellent! Waiting for the mail has never been *this* exciting 8) edit** Three years between postings
