hello,i have a optimus 8r that will not hold pressure the gasket is good it is leaking out of the hole in the cap,if i hold my thumb over it, it fires good, will tighting the 5 sided screw seal it,if yes where do i find a bit too fit......thanx Dwayne
The penta-headed screw is deliberately weird so that users dont fiddle with the insides. It is a pressure relief safety valve and it sounds like the sealing washer in yours has failed. These can be fettled but it takes a brave and well-equipped stovie to do it. Your best bet is to buy a new filler cap, this will safely solve your problem.
I believe the tank cap for the 8R is the same as the Svea 123: go here: http://packstoves.net/cart/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=10_38&products_id=66 If this is not true, someone please correct this post. However, the cap to use the mini and midi pumps will fit both stoves so I am assuming the threads are the same.
Base Camp seems to show that there is one tank cap that fits many stoves: "Tank lid, packing, hex safety valve for 55/155, 8R, 88, 99, 111/111B, 111C/111T,123R, 199, 323, 535 stoves" http://www.base-camp.co.uk/Optimus.html They are in the UK of course, there will doubtless be a US supplier with the same item for you.
The Svea 123 uses the same thread as the Optmus 8r. The Primus 71 uses the same as well. I rebuild my caps. And test them like Gary does. But don't tell anyone. Jeff
Just yesterday I replaced the pip in one of my caps. If you have a bench grinder it's fairly easy to grind down an allen wrench to five sides and make it fit. I had to put the wrench into a vice and then turn the cap by hand to get it apart. Getting an old pip removed takes some time if they are hardened (you might have to 'dig' it out a little at a time). They also have to be replaced with a suitable nitrile/buna material, I think 5mm diameter. I made sure to screw the top back in the exact same position as it was previously. By the time you figure shipping you'll be out $20 for a new cap from A&H. Scott
