I recently aquired an old coleman 425. I think I know how to operate it but my question is how do I date it and does this thing take propane, can I use white gas, or does it utilize kerosene? Any help apreciated. Can't find the camera right now I'll post some pics later if that'll help.

look under one of the tabs of tank, and as others have pointed out, perhaps a stamping on the case of the stove?

    - white gas
    - propane with the 'Century' adapter (found in Wally World)
    - no, it will not run off kerosene (AFAIK)

Ok found the camera but can't figure out how to upload. Will try again later, thanks for being patient. There are no stampings anywhere on the case or tank.

Not to be stupid but if there are no stampings on the case or the tank how do you know it's a 425???

There are some which were not stamped but they are not quite as rare as frogs hair.

The numbers areon the outside of the base, stamped, sometimes areal PITA to see--mine here is marked 5 75.

Academy Sports and Outdoors has the propane adapter actually cheaper than WalMart.

Ok, finally got the pics up  So I can use white gas from what I've read, that's the same as coleman camp fuel right? And aside of the 425 on the front there are no markings so I have no idea how to date this. Thanks guys.

Coleman fuel is correct. 425's were produced in the 1948-1953 range.

Thanks for the info. I thought maybe the writing on the take might mean something but I found it says "patent applied for".

that is one purty Coleman! take care of it, use it, and post some pics of it in action! a very nice find, indeed! AFAIK, you'll need a knob and screw (could probably use later parts? experts may want to chime in)...

I'll post some pics of it in action this evening. I fired it up this morning but can't see the flame very well. I accually do have the knob, just missing the screw and I forgot to put it back on before I took pics. Just need to find a screw so it stays on. The plunger though does have a slight bend in it so that'll need to be replaced sooner or later.

Got it fired up today. I noticed two things. First, there is a slight leak around the thing the plunger goes through and the plunger is ever so slightly bent, and second, the flame slowly pulses. Kindda sounds like the gas is pulsating. Not alot, but a little. Anyone know what causes this or how to fix it? 1275711673-100_0280_opt.jpg 1275711688-100_0282_opt.jpg 1275711698-100_0286_opt.jpg

It could be a couple of things:

    1. dirty generator
    2. obstructed fuel pickup/air intake on the valve inside the tank. Probably just needs cleaned.

Make sure you stop the leak around or inside the pump (plunger). You don't want that to ignite. There's a check valve down at the bottom of the pump tube that you could spray carb cleaner into and loosen up enough to get working properly. It might take a day or so of soaking. Also, it should have sealed when you locked the pump back by turning the pump knob clockwise until it stopped. Hopefully yours has the locking spindle in it.

If there is fuel coming out the pump, I wouldn't fire up the stove until you got that fixed.

Same goes with the filler cap. If it's leaking, fix that first. You've got to get an air-tight seal before every thing works properly.

    hope that helps,
    sam

On the newer, red tank Coleman suitcase stoves, the date is stamped on the bottom of one of the tank tabs that stick through the slits on the case. Perhaps Coleman did this on the older stoves too.

I've also seen Coleman stamp date codes on the bottom of the case itself and it was very difficult to see as the stamp uses a fine font so the lettering or numbers are pencil thin.
