Hello everyone. I'm student in Energy and Environmental Engineering in Napier university of Edinburgh. As part of my course, i've got a project about the design and construction of a paraffin stove for two different tasks cooking/heating. My problem is that I don't know how to do, what material use. I can't find any scientific book explaining how a stove work with the different components. Do you know where I could find some technical informations about paraffin stoves? where could i buy some parts of it? Thank you Simon

Hi Simon Have a look at the patents listed here on the site. The two main forms of cooking and heating are via a pressure burner, or wick. Most household heaters used a wick burner, domestic/camping cookers were pressure burners on the whole, but not always. Email me if you think I can be of any other help
Hey - A fellow Scot. I've got to commend the audacity - asking this bunch to do your leg work is really brave - just how far down the garden path do you think they might lead you..... and how dangerous might that be? More seriously the advice from Rik is first rate, read around this site and get a feel for the shapes and styles and performance of existing stoves and heaters - find out what the known failures and dangers are - consider alternative fuels; energy densities, availability, specific risks etc. How much heat do you need? Do you know who James Young was? Or what was used before paraffin? Or that it is possible to render down a seal for oil in a vat fired with King Penguins (South Georgia). Use Google. And come back with questions or proposals - Some of the people here know a lot.

This stuff is not completly described in any book, Modern pressurized stoves has been based on the same idea for some over 100 yrs, mainly with development in more silent burners, simmering possibilities, and buildt in pricking needles. The last few years reliable kerosene stoves without any kind of generator tube has won. A typical example of this is the Optimus Nova. The wery lastest technology may be the keramik osmosis pressurizing. MSR and US military are working on this, as far as I know this is not available in the market. This forum may be the best guidline to historical tech. facts, and dont hesitate to ask, but you may get a few different answers on some questions.... dsk
There is "Light and Heat from Hydrocarbon Appliances" by Dr Herman U Lahde which is basically a facsimile of 205 pages of typescript manuscript - a lot about lamps but also pressure stoves and blue flame wick stoves. Lahde worked for Ehrich and Graetz from 1926 to 1945, and then Aladdin Industries 1947 to 1960 so he knew the field.
