Does anyone know anything about the Optimus 96 silent burner? I've just aquired one, it's the first one I've seen, it came in its tin with 4 new prickers, spirit tin and two burner tops, one a nice little silent - - and the normal plate, though the plate is a larger diameter than normal and nearly blocks the top of the 'bell' completely. It runs nicely and I suspect the boiling time may be good when compared to the roarer 96. (haven't had time to comare yet).
Now for the best bit - - it was cheaper than Henry's 8R :) :D . All that was needed to get it going was a new seal in the non return valve and the filler hole soldering back to the tank.

boil time is about 4 mins, as is the roarer version (500 mils)

Yes Doug, every thing's the same, but the silent bit (inner & outer as a unit) just drop onto the top instead of the plate.
As for pics of the collection - - I might submit them for inclusion of the collectors galleries section, I've got the intelligence of a knackered pump leather and having a bit of trouble with photo bucket, it might not be me as it worked O K the first time.

Sorry Ian, I thought you were trying to say that the stove was here - - as opposed to 'there' with you, I didn't realise you might not be getting the photo.

Have you moved the picture to a sub-album or renamed it in photobucket? If so you need to revise the link here.

Sir Albert, that is a taykit i believe.

Jules i have a question could you show us the burner without the stove operating. ie. take it apart and set the parts on your bench. Somehow i have a feeliing these are regular inner and outters which happen to fit in the burner of the stove. If so, I'm going to set mine up that way as i prefer silent burners to the roarers. Easier on my ears they are.

    Not at all!

It's easily done, but it is worth bearing in mind that deleting images from Photobucket effectively deletes them from anywhere you may have posted links to them, eg. here.

It's a very small diameter burner (35mm) and you can't separate the inner & outer, they fit very precisely into a recess in the standard 'bell', I have 5 other 96's and it seems to fit the proper (Swedish) ones including a 1927 Primus. I've just found a number on the burner - - No4200, I suspect it is made by Primus, or at least Primus is written on the bell.

    Hello Henry,
it was about ?2 cheaper, :) I don't think it has been used many times, the gauze inside the riser is quite shiny & new looking.
