Have a search on the forum using 'graphite', I'm sure I remember posts on the subject not long ago. Should be readily available as graphite string in a hardware shop if there is one close by. If not someone here will probably offer you a few inches.

I use plumbers' PTFE tape, wound round the spindle to the right thickness.

Graphite packings were often combined with the excellent stuff asbestos, unfortunately this stuff has som bi effects and is prohibited.

Some friends of mine hase made replacements of lead. They clams it works well.

If you pull a length off the roll of PTFE and double it a couple of times, give it a twist and hey presto you have a length of PTFE cord. Wrap it around the spindle or a drill of the same size. Cut it along the length of the spindle and there you have little rings of packing.
Put them in one at a time, screw the gland nut down and repeat, about 3 should do it.

    Hey dog

That was a close run thing, as in my experience passing fire standard API589 at API607 temperatures just isn't upto the mark ! ;)

Trust the esteemed advice given, and get down the plumbers merchants !

    Cheers
